LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Longwood University women's basketball team will make the short trip to Lynchburg to square off against in-state rival Liberty University for the first time since the two squads clashed in the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Conference Women's Basketball Championship title game last March. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3 beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 23.
Looking at Longwood
Longwood is currently 6-12 overall this season, including 3-6 in Big South action, after dropping a pair of road games last week. The Lancers pulled within one possession of the lead with less than a minute to play before falling, 57-51, at in-state and league rival Radford on Jan. 16. Khalilah Ali/Suffolk leads the Lancers on the boards with 6.5 rebounds per game, while Brown adds 4.9. As a team, Longwood is shooting 34.7% (369-1063) from the floor, including 26.3% (105-399) from beyond the arc, and 67.8% (183-270) from the foul line.
Scouting Liberty
The Lady Flames are 11-7 so far in 2013-14 and 7-2 in Big South play. Liberty split a pair of rare overtime decisions on the road last week. The squad pulled out a 77-70 comeback victory at Winthrop on Jan. 16 before falling, 83-80, at UNC Asheville on Jan. 18. Liberty, under the direction of 15th-year head coach Carey Green, is led by Ashley Rininger with a double-double average of 16.7 points and 10.1 rebounds. Mickayla Sanders adds 8.8 points per game, while Katelyn Adams totals 8.2. As a whole, the Flames are shooting 42.4% (444-1047) from the field, including 30.9% (96-311) from three-point territory, and 74.5% (286-384) from the foul line.
Series History
Thursday's contest will mark the 32nd meeting between Longwood and Liberty in the sport of women's basketball. The Flames hold a slight, 16-15 edge in the all-time series after sweeping all three decisions between the two teams last season. In their most recent outing at the Big South Championship on Mach 10, 2013, the No. 7 seeded Lancers faced a 54-45 defeat against the No. 1 seeded Flames at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
