Longwood Falls At Home To Campbell 75-67

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Reco McCarter scored a team-high 23 points, including 11 during a 25-7 game-ending run, to lead visiting Campbell University to a 75-67 come-from-behind Big South Conference men's basketball victory past Longwood University on Saturday evening at Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Fighting Camels (8-9, 2-0 Big South) trailed 60-50 with 7:44 remaining before their late comeback against the host Lancers (5-12, 0-2 Big South) in a contest matching fellow North Division opponents.  Senior captain Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach had game-highs of 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Longwood, who led 36-28 at halftime and by as many as 13 points in the second half.  Longwood will play on the road at High Point University, another North Division opponent, on Wednesday night, January 15 at 7 p.m. in High Point, North Carolina.

"I can't imagine us being any more disappointed at any time during the year than this game," said first-year Longwood head coach Jayson Gee.  "Tristan was spectacular … that's the best defensive energy that I've seen out of him.  That last four minutes, we really self-destructed.  I have to figure out a way to help us because these guys work too hard."

Campbell took an early 12-7 lead to open the game behind four three-point field goals, including three by Andrew Ryan, the last at 15:43.  Longwood responded with 10 unanswered points to lead 17-12 at 11:38, getting an old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore transfer Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland, a three-pointer from Carey, and consecutive layups from redshirt-junior captain Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York and freshman Darrion Allen/Pompano Beach, Florida.  Another layup by Fisher kept the lead at five, 24-19, with 8:47 on the first-half clock.  A 7-2 run by the Fighting Camels tied it at 26-26 with 5:50 left in the half, before the Lancers closed the period with a 10-2 run to lead 36-28 at the intermission.  Carey scored the last seven points for the hosts, including a monster slam dunk off a steal by sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale, followed by another three-pointer and an end-to-end layup, while finishing with 18 first-half points.

Longwood continued its momentum to begin the second half and built the advantage to 48-37 at 13:42, as Ziegler scored eight points and Dublin added four points.  Carey followed with the next eight points for the Lancers, including a pair of three-pointers, and the home team had its largest lead at 56-43 with 11:10 remaining.  Unfortunately, Carey would not score again for the remainder of the night.  A jumper by Ziegler had Longwood ahead 60-50 with 7:44 on the clock, but Campbell answered with a 19-3 outburst to lead 69-63 with just 32.1-seconds on the clock.  The Fighting Camels took the lead for good at 65-63 on a layup by Darius Leonard at 1:05, after his layup had tied it at 63-63 with 2:00 left, and the visitors made 8-8 free throws to secure the road win, while ending the game on the 25-7 run.

Carey led Longwood with his game-high 26 points, including six three-pointers, adding the game-high nine rebounds.  He now totals 1,212 career points to rank 12th all-time, and ranks third with 185 career three-pointers.  Ziegler finished with 16 points, including 13 in the second half, along with seven rebounds for the Lancers.  Fisher had 11 points, off the bench, making 7-7 free throws, while Dublin contributed 10 points, also off the bench.  Sophomore captain Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York had a game-high 12 assists.  Longwood shot 39% (22-56) from the field, including 27% (6-22) on three-pointers and 85% (17-20) at the free throw line.

McCarter led Campbell with his team-high 23 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists and a game-high three steals.  Leonard finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Fighting Camels.  CU shot 46% (24-52) from the field, including 33% (9-27) on three-pointers and 78% (18-23) at the line.

Longwood and Campbell were meeting for the ninth time in the sport, and the Fighting Camels now lead the series, 5-4.  The Lancers will play at Campbell on February 15.
