BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Tyler Horan hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to lead Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference to a 7-5 non-conference baseball victory against Longwood University on Tuesday evening at English Field in Blacksburg. Jake Joyce earned the pitching win with the final 3.0 innings of late relief for the Hokies (22-12). Sophomore
Brandon Delk/Newport News had a home run and three RBI, and senior
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen had four hits and an RBI for the visiting Lancers (16-18), while freshman
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg took the hard-luck mound loss. Longwood will play again at Big South Conference North Division opponent Campbell University for a three-game weekend series on April 12-13 in North Carolina.
Longwood took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, as junior
Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-5) singled to lead-off, moved to third on a one-out double by Lacy (4-5, RBI) and scored on an RBI grounder from Delk (1-5, 3 RBI). Lacy later crossed the plate unearned via a throwing error.
Virginia Tech answered with a run in the second to make it 2-1 after Mark Zagunis (3-4, RBI) doubled to lead-off and scored on an RBI grounder by Kyle Wernicki (0-4, RBI).
Longwood added two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 4-1 following a two-run home run by Delk that also scored Lacy, who had singled with two outs.
Virginia Tech got a run back in the fifth inning when Andrew Rash (2-4, RBI) hit a two-out, solo home run, and the Hokies scored two more runs in the sixth inning to tie it at 4-4. In the sixth, Chad Pinder (1-5, RBI) singled to lead-off and stole second base with one out before scoring on an RBI single by Zagunis, who moved to second on a balk and later crossed the plate on an RBI single from Brendon Hayden (1-4, RBI).
Longwood finally pushed across another run in the 10th inning when freshman
C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-5) doubled to open the at-bat and advanced to third on a single by junior
Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-4). Roth, however, was out at the plate on a fielder's choice ball from Owens, moving Dickason to second, and he advanced to third on a fly ball from junior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (0-1), who was pinch-hitting. Lacy promptly added his fourth hit of the contest, an RBI single, to score Dickason.
Virginia Tech, however, responded with three runs in the extra 10th inning, including the two-out, two-run walk-off home run by Horan (1-5, 2 BI). Gary Schneider (1-1) had doubled to lead-off and scored the tying run on an RBI grounder from Pinder
