GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Longwood University softball team fell, 8-0, in six innings at the No. 3/4 ranked University of Florida (45-5) on Sunday afternoon in Gainesville to wrap up the squads' three-game series. The Gators' junior pitcher Hannah Rogers held the Lancers' offense hitless in the decision, as Longwood (33-14) put just one runner on base in the outing. Sophomore pitcher
Libby Morris/Dillwyn recorded the decision in the circle for the Lancers, allowing two run on five hits in two innings of work. Senior pitchers
Brooke Short/Hurt (2 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 SO) and
Ashley Cornell/Portsmouth (1.2 IP, 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 SO) both saw action for Longwood, as well.
After retiring the Longwood side in the top of the first, Florida took an early advantage in the home half of the inning. After the Gators' first two batters reached on consecutive singles, the first advanced on a high fly to center field and the next moved up on a stolen base to put runners on second and third with one out. A sacrifice fly plated Florida's first run of the game to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Lancers were unable to make any noise in the second, but the Gators extended their buffer in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run to right center.
The 2-0 margin stood through the next two and a half innings, as the sides combined for four runners left on base. Longwood's lone base runner to reach safely in the outing came in the third inning with two outs. Sophomore
Katie Shinrock/Fountain Valley, California, who sent a chopper towards the middle infield, got on board after the Florida shortstop committed a fielding error, however, the Lancers were not able to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Gators added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer to straight-away center field to increase their lead to 4-0. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth, as Florida tallied four more runs on two RBI singles and a RBI double to take the 8-0 shutout decision.
