FARMVILLE, Va. – Jimmy Luppens had two hits and two RBI to lead Canisius College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to a 12-6 non-conference baseball victory against Longwood University on Friday afternoon at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. Blake Ream/Yorktown took the pitching loss. Longwood and Canisius will continue the four-game weekend series on Saturday, March 9 with a doubleheader at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m.
Canisius took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI triple by Brett Siddall (1-4, RBI), who later scored on a fielding error. The Griffins made it 4-0 with two more runs in the third as Jesse Kelso (2-3, RBI) had a run-scoring double and later crossed the plate via a throwing error.
Longwood scored two runs in the third to make it 4-2, getting RBI singles from junior
Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-3, RBI) and Burkett (3-4, 2 RBI) that scored freshman
C.J. Roth/Yorktown (0-2) and classmate
Colton Konvicka/ Richmond (0-4), respectively. Roth had struck out to lead-off, but reached base on a passed ball, while Konvicka had drawn a walk.
Canisius added a run in the fifth to lead 5-2 after an RBI double by Shane Zimmer (2-3, RBI) that scored Kelso who had walked. The Griffins plated four more runs in the seventh to lead 9-2, getting RBI from Brooklyn Foster (2-3, RBI), who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, along with Jose Torralba (0-3, RBI) and Ryan Coppinger (1-4, RBI) on consecutive sacrifice flies.
Longwood pushed another run across in the eighth to make it 9-3 when Owens walked to open the at-bat and scored via an RBI from freshman
Kyri Washington/Prospect (0-5, RBI) on a fielder's choice.
Canisius scored three more runs in the ninth to lead 12-3 as Ronnie Bernick (0-0, RBI) walked with the bases loaded before Luppens added a two-run single.
Longwood also added three runs in the ninth, the first scoring on a bases loaded walk drawn by Burkett ahead of a two-run single from senior
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (1-5, 2 RBI). Freshman
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (2-4) also collected two hits for the Lancers.
Ream (2-1) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings for Longwood, allowing eight hits and five runs, four earned, with four walks and one strikeout.
Cortright (4-0) started and pitched the first 7.1 innings for Canisius, scattering six hits and three runs, two earned, with three walks and seven strikeouts.
