Longwood Falls At Home To Visiting Buffalo 11-4

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Jason Kanzler had four hits and three RBI, including a home run and a triple, to lead the University at Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference to an 11-4 non-conference baseball victory at Longwood University on Saturday afternoon at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Bulls (5-4) hit three home runs and led 6-0 in the contest, as Anthony MaGovney earned the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings.  Junior Alex Owens/Purcellville had two hits and an RBI for the Lancers (4-4), and freshman Joe Manion/Midlothian took the pitching loss with 4.0 innings.  Longwood and Buffalo will complete their three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 3 at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m.
   
Buffalo took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Jon Mestas (0-5) was hit by pitch, moved to second on a throwing error during a failed attempt at a pickoff, went to third on a single by Tyler Mautner (2-5) and scored unearned via a fielding error at shortstop.  The Bulls made it 3-0 with two more runs in the second after Mike Scarcello (0-1) walked and later scored on a one-out sacrifice bunt by Jim Topps (1-2, RBI).  Kyle Brennan (2-5, 2 RBI), who had reached on a bunt single, also scored via a run-scoring single by Kanzler (4-5, 3 RBI).  Buffalo made it a 6-0 contest by adding three runs in the fourth, two on a two-run homer from Kanzler with one out that also scored Topps, who had doubled, and the other run was scored by Mautner, who had also doubled before crossing the plate on a ground out by Thomas Richards (2-5, 2 RBI).
   
Longwood finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when sophomore Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-4, RBI) reached on a throwing error and scored with one out on a run-scoring double from freshman Kyri Washington/Prospect (1-5, RBI).  The Lancers added another run in the fifth to make it 6-2 after freshman C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-3) doubled and scored with one out via a sacrifice fly by junior Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-4, RBI).
   
Buffalo plated two runs in the sixth to lead 8-2, and added three more runs in the seventh to lead 11-2.  In the sixth, Kanzler tripled and scored on a sac fly by Alex Baldock (1-4, 2 RBI), and Richards added a solo homer.  In the seventh, Scarcello was hit by a pitch and scored ahead of Brennan on a two-run homer, while Baldock followed with an RBI double that scored Topps, who had walked.
   
Longwood added a run in both the seventh and ninth innings, getting a run-scoring single from Owens that scored freshman Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (2-5), who had singled too, and an RBI single by Delk that plated Owens, who had doubled.  Senior Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (2-5) added two hits again for the Lancers.
   
Manion (0-2) pitched 4.0 innings in relief for Longwood, allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned, with one walk and one strikeout.  Junior Ryan Schubert/Springfield pitched 2.0 innings of late relief, yielding two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
   
Magovney (2-0) started and pitched the first 7.0 innings for Buffalo, scattering eight hits and three runs, two earned, with one walk and three strikeouts.
