Longwood Defeats Coppin State 7-0, Falls At Navy 6-1



ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Longwood University split a pair of non-conference women's tennis matches on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland, defeating Coppin State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference 7-0, after dropping a 6-1 decision to the United States Naval Academy of the Patriot League.  The Lancers return home to host their first-ever Big South Conference match against UNC Asheville on Saturday, February 16, at 1 p.m.

Against Coppin State in the match-opening doubles competition, seniors Marta Pinyol/Barcelona, Spain and Allison Shulman/Richmond won at No. 1, 8-0.  Sophomore Malin Allgurin/Varnamo, Sweden and junior Sarah Moomau/Winchester won at No. 2, 8-0.  Junior Nicole Parker/Richmond and senior Hannah Hill/Portsmouth won at No. 3, by default.  In singles, Pinyol won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0.  Allgurin won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.  Moomau won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.  Hill won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.  Parker won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0.  Junior Bethany Law/Ona, West Virginia won at No. 6, by default.

“We played a very solid match against a well-coached Coppin State,” said second-year head coach Jakob Gustafsson.  “I hope we can build on this win as we head into a stretch of conference matches.”

Against host Navy in doubles competition, Longwood won two of the three matches for the team point.  Pinyol and Shulman fell at No. 1, 9-7.  Allgurin and Moomau won at No. 2, 9-8 (5).  Parker and Hill won at No. 3, 8-5.  In singles, Pinyol fell at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0.  Allgurin fell at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 10-1.  Shulman fell at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.  Moomau fell at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1.  Hill fell at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1. Parker fell at No. 6, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

“We came out and played some really good doubles,” said Gustafsson.  “We tried to transfer our momentum onto singles, but Navy came out very strong after being a point down.  I was proud to see how hard we fought on all the courts and we are starting to play better and better. I hope we can remember the good points and create more of them in the future matches.”
