Longwood Falls, 78-46, at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Longwood University women's basketball team fell, 78-46, at Big South Conference opponent Winthrop University (17-10, 11-4) on Thursday evening in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Senior Crystal Smith/Richmond posted a team-high 16 points for the Lancers, while classmate Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville logged a team-best 10 rebounds in the outing. Longwood (9-17, 6-9) will play its final road game of the regular season at league opponent UNC Asheville on Saturday, February 23. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Winthrop opened the game on an 11-1 run, as Longwood's first point came by way of a free throw from Smith. Coward added a pair of free throws, as well, to cut the Lancers deficit back to single-digits, but the Eagles answers with a 12-1 run to take a 23-4 advantage with 10:32 remaining in the first half. Senior Erin Neal/Durham, North Carolina logged the first field goal of the night for the Lancers and converted on a foul shot to complete the three-point play before freshman teammate Daeisha Brown/Richmond knocked down a jumper of her own. Longwood, however, was unable to put together a run, as WU outscored the visitors, 15-7, in the waning minutes of the first half to take a 44-16 lead into the break.

The Eagles scored the first bucket of the second half to extend its margin to 30, but Neal retaliated with a layup, sparking a 13-4 Lancer run that was capped by a deep three from Smith to make it 50-29 with less than 14 minutes left to play. Winthrop answered with 12 quick points, compared to a single three-point field goal from freshman Raven Williams/Richmond for LU, allowing the hosts to regain their 30-point buffer at 62-32 with 11:11 still to go. The Lancers would pull within 25 on five-straight points from Smith, but could not come any closer, as the Eagles finished the game with a 16-9 run to earn the 78-46 victory.

In addition to Longwood's 16 points from Smith, Neal added nine and Williams tallied six. As a team, the Lancers shot 24% (15-62) from the floor, including 21% (6-28) from beyond the arc, and 63% (10-16) from the line.

Dequesha McClanahan paced three double-digit scorers for Winthrop with a game-high 28 points. Aliyah Kilpatrick and Schaquilla Nunn added 14 and 11 points, respectively. As a whole, the Eagles shot 47% (30-64) from the field, 38% (3-8) from three-point territory and 71% (15-21) from the foul line. Winthrop will play its next contest against Radford on Feb. 23 beginning at 1 p.m.

Thursday's contest marked the 10th meeting ever between Longwood and Winthrop in the sport of women's basketball. The Eagles now hold a 6-4 advantage in the all-time series.
