FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore
Deborah Headen/Herndon set new career highs with five field goals and 16 total points, as the Longwood University women's basketball team suffered an 83-53 defeat against Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University (6-5, 2-0) in Farmville on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt-senior
Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas added nine points and a team-best six rebounds in the outing, as well. Despite a much closer and more competitive second half, Coastal used a 45-18, first-half score to set the tone for the rest of the game. The Chanticleers were led by Karsen Sims with 18 points in the victory. Longwood (3-7, 0-2) will wrap up its five-game homestand on Monday, December 30 when the team welcomes Big South opponent Campbell University to Willett Hall for a 7 p.m. tilt.
"Coastal shot the ball very well today," said head coach
Bill Reinson. They are an experienced team with a lot of weapons. We continue to search for a consistent effort. Unfortunately, with conference play upon us, we are going to need to find it pretty quickly."
The Lancers' first six points of the day came from beyond the arc, as junior
Rianna Frazer/Baltimore, Md. and Tobeck knocked down back-to-back threes. The home squad would quickly relinquish its only lead of the contest, however, as CCU followed with 20 consecutive points to pull ahead, 22-6, with 11:31 remaining in the first half. Sophomore
Khalilah Ali/Suffolk broke the silence for Longwood with a pair of free throws and a layup, but Coastal used a 21-1 spurt to make it 43-11 at 3:16. Headen and Tobeck hit buckets from the paint in the final minutes, while freshman
Brenna Robbins/Erie, Pa. added a three-point jumper, but the Chanticleers scored the final basket of the half to take a 45-18 margin into the break.
The squads played back-and-forth in the second half, trading baskets throughout the period. Sims opened the half with a three-pointer before Ali and Tobeck followed with jumpers of their own to make the score, 48-22, with 17:20 remaining. The visitors outscored the Lancers, 8-2, in the next three minutes to take their largest lead of the contest at 56-24 with less than 15 minutes to go. CCU led by more than 30 on two more occasions, for the last time at 60-29 with just over 13 minutes to play. Robbins scored the Lancers' next five points before Tobeck and Ali drained shots from the field to make the score, 64-38. Minutes later, though, the Chants regained a 30-point edge at 69-39 following a pair of free throws by Kayla Cook with just over four minutes to go. Headen converted on two chances from the charity stripe to spark six unanswered points for Longwood and cut the difference to 24, but CCU outscored the Lancers, 14-9, in the waning minutes to seal the 83-53 decision.
In addition to Tobeck, Robbins totaled nine points, marking a new personal-best for the rookie. Ali and Nylen logged eight points apiece in the decision, as well. Nylen, whose eight points were good for a season high, scored six of those points from the foul line. As a team, the Lancers shot 32% (17-54) from the floor, including 28% (5-18) from beyond the arc, and 64% (14-22) from the line.
Sims led three double-digit scorers for the Chants. AJ Jordan paced the squad on the boards with six rebounds. As a whole, Coastal Carolina shot 46% (30-65) from the field, 42% (10-24) from three-point territory and a perfect 100% (13-13) from the foul line.
Saturday's contest marked the five meeting ever between Longwood and Coastal in the sport of women's basketball. The Lancers still hold a slight, 3-2 edge in the all-time series.
