Longwood Faces 60-47 Setback against Eastern Kentucky

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman Treasure Avery/Lincolnton, N.C. posted personal highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double, as the Longwood University women's basketball team faced a 60-47 setback against Eastern Kentucky University (6-5) on Wednesday evening in Farmville. The Lancers trailed by just two baskets early in the second half, but the Lady Colonels mounted a 16-4 run to pull away and seal the decision. Redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas logged a career-best four, three-pointers to pace the Lancers with 12 points, while Pilar Walker totaled a game-high 16 points to lead EKU. Longwood will play its final game before the holiday break on Saturday, December 21 when the team is slated to host Bucknell University in a 2 p.m. tilt at Willett Hall.

"I'm very proud of the ladies' effort this evening," said head coach Bill Reinson. "They battled from beginning to end and did a great job of executing the defensive game plan. I thought Treasure Avery had a breakout game and Jaclyn Reagan did a terrific job of guarding Marie Carpenter."

Longwood took an early advantage, as Tobeck knocked down a deep three to spark a 9-2 spurt for the home squad in the opening minutes of play. The teams alternated jumpers from beyond the arc before the Lancers took their largest lead of the night at 14-6 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Eastern Kentucky quickly retaliated, however, scoring five in a row to pull with one possession. Freshman Emily Nylen/Rockford, Ill. laid in a bucket from the paint for Longwood, but the Lady Colonels scored the next 10 points to take a 23-18 edge at 7:05 in the first. In the waning minutes of the half, the Lancers pulled within one point on two occasions, the last of which was at 30-29 with just over three minutes to go, but EKU outscored the home squad, 6-2, before the buzzer to take a 36-31 advantage into the break.

The Lancers scored seven of the first 12 points in the second half to make it just a two-possession game, as the Lady Colonels led 41-37 at 17:27. Longwood would not come any closer, though, thanks to a 16-4 EKU run that spanned more than 14 minutes and gave the visitors their largest lead of the night at 57-41 with just under three minutes to play. Avery and Nylen hit back-to-back jumpers, and sophomore Deborah Headen/Herndon followed with a pair of free throws to cut the difference to 10 at 57-47, but Eastern Kentucky scored the final three points of the contest to seal the 60-47 outcome.

In addition to Tobeck and Avery, sophomore Jaclyn Reagan/Crossville, Tenn. and junior Rianna Frazer/Baltimore, Md. added to the offensive effort with eight points apiece, marking a new career-high for Frazer. Nylen recorded a personal-best four points in the outing, as well. As a team, the Lancers shot 35% (17-49) from the floor, including 30% (6-20) from beyond the arc, and 44% (7-16) from the line.

Walker led three double-digit scorers for the Colonels. Mariah Massengill notched 11 points, while Jasmine Henshaw totaled 10. As a whole, Eastern Kentucky shot 40% (22-55) from the field, 25% (3-12) from three-point territory and 54% (13-24) from the foul line.

Wednesday's contest marked just the fourth meeting ever between Longwood and Eastern Kentucky in the sport of women's basketball. EKU now leads the all-time series, 4-0.
