Longwood Defeats UC Davis, 2-1, to Earn Third Place at NorPac Tournament

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Kim Ruiter/Huizen, the Netherlands registered one goal and one assist to lead the No. 2E Longwood University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory against No. 2W UC Davis (6-14) on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg. With the victory, the Lancers earned third place in the 2013 Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference Tournament. Senior Stacey de Grandhomme/Cape Town, South Africa added one goal of her own in her last career game for the Lancers, while redshirt-freshman Rachel Lombardi/Marlton, N.J. tallied one assist in the outing. Senior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding/Tickhill, England totaled three saves in her final appearance, while classmate Nicole Segala/Williamsburg was named to the 2013 NorPac All-Tournament Team. Longwood closes out the 2013 campaign with a 10-12 overall record.

"We are very proud of the result today," said head coach Iain Byers. "To bounce back having had such a tough game yesterday and come away with the win today, again shows the character of our team. It was great to end the careers of four young ladies on such a high. They've committed so much to the program and we were happy that we could reward their hard work by finishing on such a good note. The game itself was a good game of hockey. We're excited to finish this well in the NorPac, and it's motivating us for bigger and better things next year."

Longwood did not waste any time pushing the ball into their offensive zone, as the squad earned a corner in just the third minute of play and de Grandhomme fired a hard shot that was blocked. UC Davis logged its first chance of the day 11 minutes later, but Kayla Wigney sent the ball high. The Lancers had another corner opportunity, this time with a wide shot coming from Lombardi, before the Aggies retaliated with three straight shots, including two that were turned away by Goulding. Longwood tallied the last chance of the half for either side when Burris inserted to sophomore Nicole Deckard/Selinsgrove, Pa. on a corner for a shot that skidded wide, sending the teams into the break knotted at 0-0.

Less than a minute into the second half, Longwood broke the game open when Lombardi sent a pass from the right end line to the left post for Ruiter, who tipped the ball on cage to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage. de Grandhomme added to Longwood's lead to make it 2-0 with less than 28 minutes to play, fielding a long pass from Ruiter before sending a backhand shot high into the cage. The Aggies were quick to answer, however, as Sophia Lisaius redirected a pass from Jamie Garcia into the left corner of the cage to pull UC Davis within one goal at 2-1. The Lancers outshot UCD, 3-2, in the waning minutes of the contest, thanks to a pair of attempts by de Grandhomme and one by Deckard to keep Longwood's lead intact and secure the 2-1 victory for the home squad in the neutral-site contest.

Saturday's matched marked just the second meeting ever between Longwood and UC Davis in the sport of field hockey. The Lancers now hold a 2-0 record in the all-time series.
