Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Sean McGonagill scored a team-high 20 points, including 16 in the first half, to lead four players in double-figure scoring as Brown University of the Ivy League took an 81-69 men's basketball victory against Longwood University on Friday night at Willett Hall in Farmville. The visiting Bears (4-1) led 43-26 at halftime, and extended the margin to as many as 25 points in the second half, before the Lancers (2-2) managed to get within 10 points in the final minute. Senior Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach scored a game-high 21 points, surpassing 1,000 career points (1,013), to lead Longwood, who will play at Penn State University of the Big Ten Conference on Sunday afternoon, November 24 at 1 p.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.

"I was proud to see our guys fight back," said first-year Longwood head coach Jayson Gee. "They [Brown] shot the ball well. Our defense couldn't get them under wraps. You can take this as a setback because we lost at home ... we've got a chance to get better."

Brown scored the first eight points of the game, including five quick points from McGonagill, who made the first of his four three-point field goals at 18:08 for the 8-0 start. Sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale put Longwood on the scoreboard with a layup at 17:51, and the Lancers battled back to within 16-11 at 13:28 after a layup by freshman Darrion Allen/Pompano Beach, Florida. A quick 10-4 spurt by the Bears made it 26-15 at 9:08, following three-pointers from Leland King and Norman Hobbie, before McGonagill made a jumper. The hosts closed to within 28-22 at 6:35 on another basket inside by Ziegler that followed five-straight points from Carey on consecutive steals and layups -- the latter with a free throw -- for a three-point play. Brown, however, took control with a 15-4 run to close the half while building a comfortable 43-26 lead at the break. King (7), McGonagill (5) and Hobbie (3) fueled the late first-half outburst, as King had 12 points at halftime to go along with the 16 first-half points by McGonagill. The Bears made 7-15 three-pointers during the opening 20 minutes.

Brown also scored the first eight points of the second half to take its largest lead at 51-26 with 17:02 left, getting six points from Rafael Maia. Carey followed with three consecutive three-pointers to pull Longwood within 51-35 at 15:22, but the Bears again extended their advantage, leading 71-48 with 7:38 to play, after Hobbie (2) and King answered Carey's three-pointers with three treys for the visitors. It was still 77-58 at 3:36 following two free throws by Tavon Blackmon, before the Lancers made a final push with a game-ending 11-4 run toward the final margin.

Carey led Longwood with his game-high 21 points, adding game highs of nine rebounds and four steals. He surpassed the magical 1,000 career point plateau and now totals 1,013 points (20th all-time) with the Lancers in 68 games (14.9) since transferring from La Salle University following his freshman season in 2009-10. Redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York posted 12 off the bench, while Ziegler and Allen each finished with 10 points -- Allen also off the bench. Sophomore Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York contributed a game-high seven assists for the Lancers. Longwood shot 38% (24-63) from the field, including 21% (3-14) on three-pointers and 75% (18-24) at the free throw line.
