Longwood Earns Historic Road Win At Xavier 67-64

Lancers first win against a member of a power conference (new AAC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, BIG EAST, Pac-12 and/or the SEC)

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Sophomore Daeisha Brown/Richmond scored a season-high 26 points, and redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas made a go-ahead three-point field goal with 30-seconds remaining, to lead visiting Longwood University to 67-64 women's basketball victory on the road at Xavier University of the BIG EAST Conference on Thursday night at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Tobeck followed the decisive three-pointer with 1-2 free throws at 00:11 to give the Lancers (3-1) their biggest win in program history, and first against a BIG EAST member and power conference school.   Shatyra Hawkes led the Musketeers (2-2) with 20 points.  Longwood will play again at in-state opponent George Mason University of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center in Fairfax.
   
Longwood scored the first basket of the game as Brown made a layup at 19:15, before Xavier took its only lead of the first half, 4-3, on a pair of free throws by Hawkes at 17:27.  The Lancers used an 18-0 run over the next 10-plus minutes to take their largest lead of the half at 21-4 with 7:19 on the clock.  Brown closed the outburst with two free throws and scored nine points, while sophomores Khalilah Ali/Suffolk and Deborah Headen/Herndon contributed four points and three points, respectively.  The Musketeers, however, answered with a 15-2 run to close to within 23-19 at 3:07 on a three-point field goal by Aliyah Zantt, getting eight quick points from Hawkes.  Longwood, though, finished the period strong with points from five different players down the stretch to lead 33-22 at the intermission, including a layup from Tobeck to end the half.  Brown scored 15 first-half points for the visitors, while Hawkes had 11 points at the break.
   
Longwood quickly increased the advantage to start the second half, taking its largest lead of the game at 45-25 with 15:51 remaining behind five quick points from sophomore Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Florida, including a three-pointer, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Brown.  Xavier responded with an 18-4 run to close to within 49-43 at 10:03, sparked by six points from Jenna Crittendon.  The Lancers answered too, using a 9-4 run to lead 58-47 at 7:23, getting a layup from Tobeck and a three-pointer by Headen around four points from Brown.  It was still 62-54 after a layup by Skersick at 4:13, but six-straight points made it 62-60 at 2:15, before freshman Brenna Robbins/Erie, Pennsylvania made 1-2 free throws for a 63-60 lead at 2:00.  Hawkes and Crittendon followed with consecutive layups, respectively, to give the Musketeers their first lead since the opening minutes at 64-63 with 49-seconds to play.  Tobeck made the go-ahead three-pointer with 30-seconds on the clock, and after a pair of missed free throws by the hosts, she added 1-2 free throws at 00:11 to secure the upset triumph.
   
Brown led Longwood with her season-high and game-high 26 points, making 8-16 field goals and 10-10 free throws, adding six rebounds and five assists.  Tobeck had a season-high 13 points and a game-high and career-high 15 rebounds for her second career double-double, adding three steals, while Skersick tied her career high with 11 points for the Lancers.  Headen contributed a career-high 10 points.  Longwood shot 41% (24-58) from the field, including 18% (3-17) on three-pointers and 84% (16-19) at the free throw line.
   
Hawkes led Xavier with her 20 points, adding rebounds.  Crittendon had 12 points for the Musketeers, while Zantt and Leah Schaeffer each finished with 11 points.  XU shot 42% (23-55) from the field, including 19% (3-16) on three-pointers and 54% (15-28) at the line.
   
Longwood and Xavier were meeting for the first time in the sport, as the Lancers now lead the series, 1-0.
