Longwood Splits Pair At North Carolina Central

DURHAM, N.C. – Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader on the road at North Carolina Central University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Saturday in Durham, North Carolina.  The Lancers (16-16) were led in the second game 5-3 victory by freshman Brandon Delk|Newport News (Warwick) with a pinch-hit two-run double, and senior captain Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) with two hits and an RBI, while junior Kyler Morgan|Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) gained the pitching win.  In the first game 10-6 loss against the Eagles (10-23), junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) had four hits, including a home run, and sophomore Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) had a home run and four RBI, while senior captain Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) took the pitching setback.  Longwood and North Carolina Central will play the series finale on Sunday, April 8, in North Carolina at 12 p.m.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored its five runs in the fifth inning and finished the game with 10 hits.  Freshman Zach Jordan|Hopewell (Matoaca) (2-2) opened the at-bat with a single and moved to third on a double by sophomore captain Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (2-3), crossing the plate on an RBI single from freshman Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-3, RBI).  Dickason scored when Lacy (0-4, RBI) reached on a fielding error, and Biddix scored on a run-scoring single by Newman (2-4, RBI).  Lacy and Newman were plated on the pinch-hit, two-run double by Delk (1-2, 2 RBI).

Morgan (4-3) started for Longwood and pitched the complete-game 7.0 innings, scattering four hits and one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts.

NCCU scored a run in the first and two runs in the seventh, led by Ross Plummer (1-3, 2 RBI) with a two-run single, while Glynn Frye (1-5) started for the Eagles and pitched the 7.0 innings, yielding 10 hits and two earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.

In the opener, Longwood scored three runs in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the ninth with 11 hits in the game.  In the first, Burkett (2-5, 4 RBI) hit a one-out, three-run home run that also scored Dickason (1-5, RBI) and Lacy (4-5, RBI) who had doubled and singled, respectively.  It was Burkett's third homer this season.  In the third, Lacy hit a one-out solo home run, his fourth round-tripper this spring.  In the fourth, Dickason's RBI grounder scored sophomore Zach Mihalko|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-4) who had reached on an infield single.  In the ninth, Burkett added an RBI double that plated Newman (0-4) who had drawn a walk.  Freshman Joey Varaksa|Charlottesville (Albemarle) (2-5) also had two hits in the game.

Gwaltney (0-4) started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

NCCU scored six runs in the first and added two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings, finishing the game with 14 hits.  Tyson Simpson (2-4, 2 RBI), Michael Romano (2-5, 2 RBI), and Carter Williamson (2-5, 2 RBI) each had two hits and two RBI for the Eagles.  Sam Fulmer (3-2) started for the hosts and pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering nine hits and four earned runs with one walk and eight strikeouts.
