FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a softball doubleheader against the visiting University of Virginia from the Atlantic Coast Conference Tuesday at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers (24-15) won the nightcap 3-0 while led by freshman

Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) with a run-scoring single, while junior
Ashley Cornell|Portsmouth (Churchland) earned the pitching shutout against the Cavaliers (19-14). In the opener, senior

Katie Shinrock|Fountain Valley, Calif. (Edison) had the only hits, while freshman
Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham County) took the pitching loss. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, April 4, on the road at future Big South Conference rival and in-state school Radford University in Radford at 3 p.m.
In game two, Longwood scored its three runs in the third inning as Shinrock (1-3) doubled with one out, followed by an infield single from sophomore
Leta Bressin|Gloucester (Gloucester) (1-3), before Nishitomi (1-2, 2 RBI) doubled down the left field line to plate both runners. Nishitomi later crossed the plate on a two-out single to left by Short (1-3, RBI). Cornell (8-4) took care of the rest for the Lancers with her outstanding complete-game, three-hit effort over the 7.0 innings while walking one with five strikeouts.
Virginia's only hits were by Taylor Williams (1-3), Marcy Bowdren (1-3), and Kennedy Byxbee (1-2) -- all singles. Rachel Gillen (5-6) took the pitching loss for the Cavaliers over 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
In game one, Virginia scored its two runs in the third inning courtesy a one-out, two-run single to right center field by Alex Skinkis (1-2, 2 RBI) that scored Byxbee (0-2) who had walked to open the at-bat, and Giannina Cipolloni (2-4) who had followed with an infield single. Bowdren (2-3) also had two hits for the Cavaliers, while Melanie Mitchell (13-7) gained the complete-game shutout over the 7.0 innings, yielding just two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Kramer (1-2) and Shinrock (1-1) collected the hits for Longwood, including a double by Kramer. Morris (10-8) took the hard-luck pitching loss for the Lancers over the 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and two earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
