BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 6-2 baseball decision to visiting in-state school VMI of the Big South Conference Tuesday night at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (21-18) were led by sophomore Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) with two hits, including a home run, while freshman Brandon Vick|Newport News (Warwick) took the pitching loss against the Keydets (14-26).  Longwood will play again this weekend, hosting a three-game series against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore as the action will begin with the program's Senior Night on Friday, April 27, at 6 p.m. to include a special pre-game ceremony in recognition of senior captains Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) and Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem).

Longwood took an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning as Burkett (2-4, RBI) hit a no doubt solo home run to left field with one out.  It was his sixth homer this season.  VMI, however, scored four unearned runs in the second inning while aided by two fielding errors along with a throwing miscue by the Lancers.  Matt Winn (1-4, RBI), Rob Dickinson (1-3, 2 RBI), and George Piccirilli (1-5, RBI) each gained RBI during the at-bat that witnessed two walks as well.

Longwood answered back with a run in the third when sophomore captain Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (1-3) drew a lead-off walk and scored on an RBI single by junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-4, RBI).  It remained a 4-2 contest until the ninth when the Keydets plated a pair of insurance runs via a run-scoring single by Dickinson who later crossed the plate as well on a wild pitch.

Vick (5-2) took the pitching setback for Longwood with the first 2.0 innings, yielding two hits and no earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.  Junior Bobby Shelton|Forest (Jefferson Forest) tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits with no walks and four strikeouts.  Freshman Tyler Wislocki|Annadale (W.T. Woodson) pitched 2.0 shutout innings of relief, yielding one hit with no walks and one strikeout.

Andrew Deal (2-1) gained the mound win for VMI with 5.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
