Longwood Defeats UMBC 5-2 For Series Sweep

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 5-2 baseball victory past visiting UMBC of the America East Conference Sunday at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (15-14) swept the three-game weekend series against the Retrievers (7-16) while led in the finale by senior captain Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) with two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, along with  junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) with two hits and an RBI, while junior Bobby Shelton|Forest (Jefferson Forest) gained the pitching win.  Longwood will play again on Wednesday, April 4, welcoming in-state opponent the College of William and Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association to Bolding Stadium in Farmville at 6 p.m.  Admission is free to all home spring sports events.
   
Longwood scored its five runs on 12 hits, finishing the series with 23 runs and 39 hits over the three games.  Newman (2-4, 2 RBI) got it started in the first inning as the lead-off batter when he hit a 2-0 pitch high and deep over the fence in left field for his third home run in two days.  Newman now has a team-best seven homers this season.  Lacy (2-4, RBI) followed with a one-out double down the right field line and later crossed the plate during a run-down play between first and second base as a teammate was caught stealing.  The Lancers made it 3-0 with a run in the fourth when Newman singled to center field to score sophomore Zach Mihalko|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (2-4) who had reached on a one-out single up the middle.
   
UMBC got a run on the board in the sixth after loading the bases with no outs and getting a sacrifice fly from Tom Gilchrist (0-3, RBI).  Longwood answered with two more runs in the sixth after a sacrifice fly from sophomore captain Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (0-3, RBI) scored Mihalko who had opened the at-bat with a perfectly-placed bunt between the mound and third base.  Lacy added a two-out double to the right field corner that plated freshman Conner Hall|Mechanicsville (Atlee) (2-4) who had singled.  The Retrievers added a final run in the eighth when Brian Klukowicz (3-4) singled and later scored courtesy a throwing error.  Freshman Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (2-4) also had two hits in the game for the hosts.
   
Shelton (1-1) started for Longwood and pitched the first 3.0 scoreless innings of a four-man staff day, allowing just one hit with two walks and one strikeout.  Freshman Aaron Myers|Newport News (Denbigh) tossed the final 3.0 innings to gain credit for his first collegiate save (1), scattering five hits and one unearned run with no walks and one strikeout.
   
Jason Allinder (3-4) also had three hits for UMBC, while Shane Vlasic (2-3) started for the Retrievers and pitched the first 5.2 innings, yielding 11 hits and five earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts.
