FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader past visiting Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon and evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) slammed a towering two-run home run to right field for the game-winner in the nightcap. Sophomore
Ryan Schubert|Springfield (Annandale) earned the pitching win in relief in the first game, while freshman
Zach Jordan|Hopewell (Matoaca) gained the mound win in relief in the second game. Longwood remains at home to host Niagara University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this weekend, March 9-11, for a four-game series at Bolding Stadium in Farmville that begins on Friday at 3 p.m.
In the opener, Longwood scored runs in the first and third to lead 2-0 through five innings before Norfolk State was able to put unearned runs on the scoreboard in each of the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings to lead 3-2. Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (2-3) who had reached on a one-out single. In the third, Biddix walked and scored on an RBI double by sophomore
Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) (2-4, RBI). Trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth, Biddix drew a two-out walk and moved to second when Burkett was hit by a pitch. Newman battled at the plate and finally got the pitch he was looking for and drove it to the wall in right-center field as Biddix and Burkett crossed the plate for the triumph. Lacy (2-4) also had two hits in the opener.
Schubert (2-0) garnered the pitching win in relief for Longwood with the final 1.2 innings, scattering three hits and one unearned run with no walks and one strikeout. Freshman
Brandon Vick|Newport News (Warwick) had started for the Lancers and pitched the first 6.1 solid innings, yielding only five hits and one unearned run with two walks and two strikeouts.
Rafael Colon (2-4, RBI) and Chris Warren (2-4) each had two hits for Norfolk State, while Chris Horne (0-2) took the loss in relief with the final 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, earned, with two walks and five strikeouts.
