Longwood Splits With Temple - Win 3-2, Fall 11-1

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader with visiting Temple University of the Atlantic 10 Conference Sunday afternoon at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (7-3) won the first game 3-2 in dramatic fashion as freshman Brandon Delk|Newport News (Warwick) hit a game-winning RBI single with one out that scored sophomore Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) who had reached on a single as well -- one of his three hits along with an RBI in the opener.  Freshman Brandon Vick|Newport News (Warwick) earned the pitching win in late relief of senior starter Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) who went 7.0 solid innings.  The Owls (3-6), however, took the nightcap 11-1 while never threatened; Burkett and senior Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) had two hits each.  Longwood will host Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for a twinbill on Wednesday, March 7, at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m.
   
In game one, Longwood fell behind 1-0 in the fourth before scoring two runs in the seventh to lead 2-1.  The Owls added another run in the eighth to tie it at 2-2 before the exciting finish in the ninth.  In the seventh, Burkett (3-4, RBI) hit a one-out RBI triple and junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-3, RBI) added a two-out run-scoring single.  Burkett singled up the middle with one out in the ninth, advanced to second on a single by Newman (1-3), and moved to third when Lacy was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Delk (1-5, RBI) promptly lined a base hit to left field to plate Burkett for the walk-off victory.  Freshman Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (2-4) had two hits in the contest.
   
Gwaltney pitched the first 7.0 innings for Longwood, scattering just five hits and one run, earned, with no walks and four strikeouts.  Vick (2-0) tossed the final 2.0 innings for the Lancers, yielding three hits and one run, unearned, with no walks and one strikeout for the decision.
   
Nick Lustrino (3-4) led Temple with three hits, and Elijah Yarborough (1-4, RBI) had an RBI, while Ryan Kuehn (0-1) took the mound loss with 1.1 innings of late relief that included three hits and one run, earned, with one walk and no strikeouts.
   
In game two, Temple jumped on Longwood early with three runs in the first, two more runs in the second, and five runs in the third to lead 10-0.  The Lancers avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth, and the Owls scored a final run in the seventh for the final 10-run margin.  In the sixth, Newman (2-3) led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Lacy (1-3).  Freshman Conner Hall|Mechanicsville (Atlee) (0-0, RBI) pinch-hit and provided a sacrifice fly that scored Newman.  Burkett (2-3) also added two hits in the contest.
   
Sophomore Cory Ramsey|Petersburg (Matoaca) started for Longwood and took the mound loss with the first 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, five earned, with one walk and two strikeouts.
   
Jordan Queja (3-4, 2 RBI) led Temple with three hits and two RBI, Foster Dunigan (3-4, RBI) had three hits and one RBI, and Lustrino (2-5, 2 RBI) added two hits and two RBI for the visitors.  Steve Nikorak (1-2) gained the pitching win for the Owls with the first 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
