COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped both games of a softball doubleheader on the road at the University of South Carolina from the Southeastern Conference Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina, falling by scores of 7-2 and 12-5. The Lancers (23-14) were led in game one by freshman
Katie Shinrock|Fountain Valley, Calif. (Edison) with a hit and two RBI, while junior
Ashley Cornell|Portsmouth (Churchland) took the pitching setback against the Gamecocks (22-16). In game two, senior
Ashley Kramer|Ashburn (Broad Run) had two hits and two RBI, and freshman
Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham County) took the pitching loss. Longwood will play again Tuesday, April 3, hosting the University of Virginia from the Atlantic Coast Conference for a doubleheader at Lancer Field in Farmville at 3:30 p.m.
In the opener, Longwood scored two runs on four hits -- scoring both runs in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run single by Shinrock (1-2, 2 RBI). Junior
Jordan Cox|Springfield (Robert E. Lee) (1-3) and freshman
Megan Baltzell| Stafford (Mountain View) (1-3) each had hits as well for the Lancers, including a double by Cox.
Cornell (7-4) started for Longwood and pitched the complete-game 6.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and four earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts.
South Carolina scored seven runs on 10 hits -- scoring two runs in the second, three runs in the fourth, and single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored five runs on five hits -- scoring one run in the first, two runs in the third, and two runs in the fifth to extend the game to its regulation seven innings. In the first, junior
Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) (1-2, RBI) had a run-scoring single, while in the third, Short walked and later scored via an error ahead of an RBI single by Kramer (2-3, 2 RBI). In the fifth, Kramer added a run-scoring double while Cox (2-3) scored on a wild pitch after a walk.
Morris (10-7) started for Longwood and pitched the complete-game 6.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and 11 earned runs with four walks and one strikeout.
South Carolina scored 12 runs on 10 hits -- scoring seven runs in the third, and five runs in the fourth.
