FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 5-2 baseball decision to visiting George Washington University of the Atlantic 10 Conference Friday evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) took the pitching setback. Longwood will play again Saturday, March 31, hosting the University of Maryland-Baltimore County from the America East Conference for a doubleheader at Bolding Stadium in Farmville at 1 p.m.
Longwood took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore captain
Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (1-5) led-off the at-bat with a single and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to left field by Newman (1-3, RBI). GW tied it at 1-1 with a run in the second after a two-out double from Jimmy Best (1-4) ahead of a run-scoring single by Brookes Townsend (1-4, RBI). The Colonials scored three runs in the fifth as Matthew Murakami (2-5, 2 RBI) had an RBI double, Stephen Oswald (3-4, RBI) had an RBI single, and Derek Brown (0-4, RBI) contributed an RBI on a ground-ball out.
George Washington made it 5-1 in the sixth inning when Ryan Hickey (2-4) doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Murakami. The Lancers added a run in the eighth inning courtesy a two-out, solo home run to left field from Burkett (1-3, RBI), his first homer this season. Freshman
Brandon Delk|Newport News (Warwick) (2-3) added two hits for LU, while Brett Bowers (2-4) had two hits for the visitors as well.
Gwaltney (0-3) started for Longwood and pitched the complete-game 9.0 innings, yielding 11 hits and five earned runs with no walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Brian Derner (1-5) started for George Washington and pitched the complete-game 9.0 innings, scattering seven hits and two earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts.
The fast-moving contest took only one-hour, 41-minutes to complete, easily the quickest nine-inning game for Longwood this season.
