BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 5-1 baseball decision to visiting Ivy League member Cornell University Thursday evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (11-10) trailed just 2-0 after five innings before falling behind 4-0 in the sixth against the Big Red (10-4) who added a final run in the ninth.  Longwood was led by senior captain Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) with an RBI double in the sixth inning, while freshman Zach Jordan|Hopewell (Matoaca) started and took the pitching loss.  Longwood and Cornell will continue the four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday, March 23, at Bolding Stadium in Farmville at 4 p.m.

Cornell took a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI single by Marshall Yanzick (4-5, 3 RBI), and the Big Red made it 2-0 in the fifth after Brian Billigen (1-2) singled and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch.  Cornell added two more runs in the sixth when Yanzick provided a two-run single down the right field line to lead 4-0.

Longwood got on the scoreboard in the sixth as well following the two-out, RBI double off the wall in left center field by Newman that plated freshman Joey Varaksa|Charlottesville (Albemarle) (1-3) who had drawn a one-out walk to make it 4-1.  Sophomore Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-4) almost made it a one-run game as he followed Newman's blast with a hard hit ball of his own that unfortunately was caught at the wall in right field.

Cornell added a final run in the ninth as Matt Hall (2-5, RBI) contributed a run-scoring double for the final margin.  Brenton Peters (3-4) had three hits for the Big Red, while Chris Burke (2-4) and Frank Hager (2-5) each had two hits along with Hall.  Connor Kaufmann (3-1) earned the pitching win with the first 5.2 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with one walk and one strikeout.

Junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-4) extended his current hitting streak to 14 games, and his reaching base streak to 18 games, with a two-out single in the first inning.  Jordan (1-2) took the mound loss with the first 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits and two runs, both earned, with two walks and two strikeouts.  Freshman Tyler Wislocki| Annandale (W.T. Woodson) tossed the final 3.0 innings of relief, yielding four hits and one run, earned, with no walks and one strikeout.
