CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Longwood University split a pair of softball games Saturday during day two of the Charleston Southern Tournament hosted by future Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern University in South Carolina. The Lancers (17-9) took a 7-0 shutout victory past Ohio University (8-10) of the Mid-American Conference before dropping a 2-0 decision to the host Buccaneers (12-12). Longwood was led by freshman
Kori Nishitomi|Kaneohe, Hawaii (Maryknoll) with a hit and two RBI against OU, and sophomore
Leta Bressin|Gloucester (Gloucester) added a hit and an RBI as well, while junior
Ashley Cornell|Portsmouth (Churchland) gained the complete-game pitching win. Freshman
Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham County) took the mound setback against CSU. Longwood will play its finale in the tournament on Sunday, March 18, against Ohio University at 1 p.m. in South Carolina.
Against Ohio, it was scoreless through four innings before Longwood scored two runs in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth for the victory. In the fifth, Nishitomi (1-3, 2 RBI) hit a one-out RBI double that scored Bressin (1-1, RBI) who had walked. Junior
Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) (0-2, RBI) added a sacrifice fly that plated freshman
Megan Baltzell|Stafford (Mountain View) (0-1, RBI) who had also walked. In the sixth, the Lancers were aided by seven walks and a couple of wild pitches during the at-bat. Those earning RBI while drawing walks were Nishitomi and Baltzell, while Bressin added a run-scoring single before scoring on a wild pitch as did Baltzell.
Cornell (4-1) gained the complete-game and shutout pitching win for Longwood with 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Against Charleston Southern, it was scoreless through five innings before the Buccaneers scored two runs in the sixth inning for the win. Jana Matthews (1-3, RBI) had a run-scoring double, and Melissa Adams (1-2, RBI) added an RBI single during the at-bat. Longwood had two hits in the game by Bressin (1-2) and senior
Brittney Latka|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-2). Morris (7-5) took the complete-game mound loss for the Lancers with 6.0 innings, yielding six hits and two runs, both earned, with three walks and six strikeouts.
Morgan Dowdy (8-6) earned the complete-game, two-hit shutout win for CSU, pitching the 7.0 innings with four walks and five strikeouts.
