Longwood Falls On The Road At Campbell 15-6

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 15-6 baseball decision on the road at future Big South Conference opponent Campbell University Friday night in Buies Creek, North Carolina.  The Lancers (11-7) trailed 8-1 after three innings and never recovered against the host Fighting Camels (16-3) who scored seven runs in the third inning.  Longwood was led by senior captain Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) with three hits and three RBI, along with sophomore captain Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) two hits and an RBI, while sophomore Cory Ramsey| Petersburg (Matoaca) took the pitching setback.  Longwood and Campbell will complete the three-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in North Carolina.

Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dickason (2-5, RBI) singled to open the game and scored with two outs on an RBI single by Newman (3-5, 3 RBI).  Campbell answered with a run in the first as well as Michael Felton (3-4, 2 RBI) provided a run-scoring single.  The Fighting Camels broke it open with their seven-run third on the strength of eight hits, including a two-run double from Blake Boyce (3-3, 2 RBI).  Campbell added runs in the fourth and fifth as well, and two more runs in the sixth to lead 12-1.

The Lancers scored a run in the seventh with two outs as Dickason hit a run-scoring single that scored sophomore Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-5) who had singled.  Longwood plated two more runs in the eighth when freshman Joey Varaksa|Charlottesville (Albemarle) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI single that scored junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-4) who had walked, and Newman scored on a wild pitch after reaching base via a single too.  Campbell scored its final three runs in the eighth before Newman added a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth for the Lancers to account for the final nine-run margin.  The Fighting Camels totaled 24 hits, including three each by Felton, Boyce, Jimmy Brenneman (3-4, RBI), and David Olson (3-5, RBI).  Felton, Boyce, and Tyler Hutchinson (1-1, 2 RBI) each had two RBI for the hosts.  Longwood had 13 hits in the highly-offensive contest that totaled 21 runs and 37 hits.

Ramsey (0-3) started and took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 2.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs, all earned, with no walks and eight strikeouts.  Freshman Aaron Myers|Newport News (Denbigh) tossed 3.1 innings of middle relief, yielding nine hits and four runs, all earned, with one walk and four strikeouts.  Classmate Zach Jordan|Hopewell (Matoaca) the final 2.0 innings of relief, yielding four hits and three runs, all earned, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Matt Sergey (7-6) gained the mound win for Campbell, pitching the first 7.0 innings and yielding eight hits and two runs, both earned, with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
