FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University softball head coach Kathy Riley has announced that Carly Adams|Colonial Heights (Home Schooled), Jamie Barbour|Amelia (Amelia County), Hannah Burmeister|Chesapeake (Grassfield) and Emily Murphy|Virginia Beach (Kempsville) have signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the Lancers for the 2012-13 academic year. All four signees are from Virginia, including a local product from nearby Amelia and a pair from the Tidewater area.

“This group of student-athletes keeps Longwood right on track in maintaining their competitive edge against many of the Division I teams from across the United States,” said Riley. “We look for these softball athletes to make immediate contributions to our 2012-13 season due to their athleticism and competitive spirit.”

Adams is a shortstop that throws right-handed and bats left-handed. She plays summer softball with the Virginia Lady Titans.

“Carly Adams can make an immediate impact on the Longwood softball program because she has softball instincts and is a student of the game. Carly plays the game hard and is very team oriented; look for her to battle at a variety of positions as a freshman due to her versatility.”

Barbour, a left-handed outfielder, is a local talent from nearby Amelia. She earned All-James River District  and All-Region B First Team honors at first base as a junior. She plays summer softball with the Virginia Lady Titans.

“I expect Jamie to make her mark at Longwood in the classroom and on the field. Jamie is achievement-oriented and aspires to excel at anything she commits to. She is a strong center fielder who fearlessly patrols the outfield and swings the bat with authority.”

Burmeister is a right-handed outfielder from Chesapeake. She earned All-Tidewater Second Team honors as a junior. Hannah plays summer softball with Virginia Legends 18u Elite.

“Hannah is a young lady who thrives on competition and gives 100 percent to preparing herself as an athlete. What I love about Hannah is she is always invested in the game and gets a great jump on the ball in the outfield. She also has a strong upside offensively, we are truly excited about Hannah becoming a Lancer.”

Murphy is a right-handed shortstop from Virginia Beach. She hit .522 as a junior and earned First Team All-Eastern Region, All-Beach District and All-Tidewater First Team recognition. She plays summer softball with Virginia Legends 18u Elite.

“Emily has the tools to become a big offensive and defensive threat. Not only does she have a great arm, she runs well and has an athletic body that can produce power numbers at the plate.”
