FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept two games past Oakland University Friday during the opening day of the Wilson DeMarini Longwood Spring Classic at Lancer Field in Farmville. Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) earned a complete-game pitching victory. Cox added three hits and five RBI in game two, Baltzell had one hit and two RBI, and Christian had one hit and one RBI, while freshman
Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham) gained the complete-game pitching win. Longwood is scheduled to play again in the tournament on Sunday afternoon, February 26, against Iona College at 1:45 p.m., and St. Peter's College at 4 p.m.
In game one, Longwood scored a run in the first on an RBI double by Christian (3-4, 3 RBI) that scored Short (2-3) who had singled, and the Lancers added three runs in the second courtesy a solo home run from Cox (3-3, 2 RBI) and a two-out, two-run homer by Baltzell (2-4, 2 RBI). LU made it 5-0 with a run in the third when Cox added a run-scoring single that scored Short again who had reached on a double. Oakland scored a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Erika Polidori (2-4, RBI) to make it 5-1 before the hosts added two more runs in the sixth to lead 7-1 after a two-out, two-run double from Christian. The Grizzlies managed two runs in the seventh on a two-run homer from Erin Galloway (2-4, 2 RBI).
Short (4-1) earned the Longwood pitching win with the complete-game 7.0 inning effort, scattering eight hits and three runs, all earned, with one walk and one strikeout.
In game two, Longwood took a 2-0 lead in the second following a two-run double by Baltzell (1-2, 2 RBI). Oakland scored in the second as well via a throwing error. The Lancers added three runs in the fourth to lead 5-1 as Baltzell was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch ahead of a two-out, two-run single from Cox (3-5, 5 RBI). The Grizzlies added a run in the fifth courtesy a fielding error before LU plated three runs in the sixth to lead 8-2 after Christian (1-3, RBI) hit a solo home run to lead-off the inning and Cox followed with a two-run homer. Longwood made it 9-2 in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Cox, before OU added a final run in the seventh via an RBI single from Shelby Gott (2-3, RBI) while aided by another throwing error.
Morris (5-2) earned the Longwood pitching win with another complete-game 7.0 inning effort, yielding only six hits and three runs, all unearned, with two walks and three strikeouts. Freshman
Kori Nishitomi|Kaneohe, Hawaii (Maryknoll) (2-4) also had two hits in the second game for the Lancers.
The tournament continues Saturday with four games scheduled, beginning at 9:15 a.m., and will feature Oakland, Iona, St. Peter's, and Quinnipiac University.
