CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Longwood University dropped two games in a softball doubleheader at the 24th ranked University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Wednesday, falling in the opener 16-0 in five innings and 10-5 in the nightcap. Junior Jordan Cox|Springfield (Robert E. Lee) led Longwood's effort, going 2-4 at the plate in the 10-5 loss to the Tar Heels (9-0) with two RBI, while junior Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) was 3-4, tallying a run and RBI. The Lancers (7-3) return home for the Wilson DeMarini Longwood Spring Classic this weekend February 24-26, hosting Oakland, Iona and St. Peter's in Farmville at Lancer Field.

In the day's first game, Longwood was shutout on a no-hitter from Lori Spingola through five innings of play. UNC did give up three walks, however, as freshman Kori Nishitomi|Kaneohe, Hawaii (Maryknoll) (0-1), senior Ashley Kramer|Ashburn (Broad Run) (0-1), and sophomore Marci Christian|Arvonia (Buckingham) (0-1) each reached base. UNC got its scoring started with four runs in the first inning that included a three-run homer. UNC scored four more in the second inning before adding eight runs in the fourth -- four coming from a two-run homer and two scores off wild pitches -- for the final 16-0 tally. Freshman Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham) (4-2) took the pitching loss.

In the second game, Longwood took the early lead in the top of the second inning 1-0 off a run by Christian (1-4) who crossed the plate on an error by the Tar Heels. UNC answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up at one apiece. The Lancers took the lead again in the third, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Megan Baltzell|Stafford (Mountain View) (1-4) reached first on her at-bat and came around to score after Short (3-4, 1 RBI) hit a triple down the right field line. Short scored in the next sequence via a fielder's choice that also helped Cox (2-4, 2 RBI) reach first. That lead was squelched by six UNC runs in the bottom of the third off five hits that included three singles and two doubles. The Lancers fought back for two more scores in the top half of the fourth inning, closing to within 7-5. Longwood, however, left three base runners stranded, including the go-ahead run. Freshman Katie Shinrock |Fountain Valley, Calif. (Edison) (0-4) scored an unearned run, while Nishitomi (1-3) earned the second run of the inning when Kramer (0-2, 1 RBI) walked with bases loaded. After UNC added three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth, Longwood was unable to overcome the deficit and the Tar Heels claimed the victory. Short (3-1) took the pitching loss.
