FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University won two softball games Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Lancer Lead-Off Tournament at Lancer Field in Farmville to claim the event's title. The Lancers (7-1) earned a pair of victories past Big East Conference opponents, defeating St. John's University 10-2 in five innings before getting past Seton Hall University 8-5. Courtney Long|Mechanicsville (Hanover) with a three-run home run, and sophomore
Marci Christian|Arvonia (Buckingham) with a solo home run and two RBI, while junior
Brooke Short|Hurt (Altavista) earned the complete-game pitching victory. Christian added a three-run triple against the Pirates, while senior
Ashley Kramer|Ashburn (Broad Run) had two hits and two RBI, and freshman
Megan Baltzell| Stafford (Mountain View) contributed a home run as well, while freshman
Libby Morris|Dillwyn (Buckingham) took the complete-game mound win. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, February 22, a doubleheader at the University of North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference in Chapel Hill at 3 p.m.
Against St. John's, Longwood scored a run in the first when Baltzell (3-3) singled and later scored on an RBI single by Short (1-2, RBI). The Lancers added two runs in the second as Christian led-off with a solo home run and freshman
Katie Shinrock|Fountain Valley, Calif. (Edison) (1-3, RBI) added an RBI single to score Long (2-2, 3 RBI) who had walked. LU added three more runs in the third when Long hit a one-out, three-run home run, and the hosts scored a run in the fourth after an RBI single from Christian scored Short who had been hit-by-a-pitch. Kori Nishitomi|Kaneohe, Hawaii (Maryknoll) (2-4, RBI) added an RBI single, and junior

Short (3-0) pitched the complete-game 5.0 innings, scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with two walks and one strikeout. The Red Storm managed single runs in each of the second and fifth innings.
Against Seton Hall, Longwood led 8-2 after five innings before the Pirates scored three runs in the seventh to make it a three-run difference. The Lancers scored one run in the first when Baltzell (3-4, RBI) led-off with a homer, and the hosts added five runs in the third as Kramer (2-4, 2 RBI) provided an RBI single ahead of the three-run triple by Christian (1-3, 3 RBI) that was followed by an RBI credited to sophomore
Leta Bressin|Gloucester (Gloucester) (2-2, RBI) when reaching on an error while sacrificing. LU scored a run in the fourth on an RBI infield single from Kramer, and added a run in the fifth when Bressin singled and later scored unearned via a throwing error.
Morris (4-1) pitched the complete-game 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, all earned, with four walks and four strikeouts. Seton Hall had scored single runs in both the first and third innings before its last-inning effort.
