Longwood Drops 79-37 Decision At San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Longwood University women's basketball dropped a 79-37 decision at San Diego State University of the Mountain West Conference on Wednesday evening in San Diego, California. The Lancers (2-15) were led by senior Brittanni Billups|Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) with 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Morgan Smith|Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) added eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds. San Diego State (9-4) was led by Kiyana Stamps and Ahjalee Harvey with 15 points each. Longwood returns to action on Saturday, January 7, when it plays at the United States Air Force Academy at 5 p.m. ET in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Longwood fell behind 14-2 with 15:22 remaining in the first half. The Lancers scored their first four points from the foul line before Billups a layup with 12:31 left in the half. SDSU extended the lead to 26 (42-16) with 2:00 remaining in the half and led 45-19 at halftime. The Lancers trimmed the lead to 22 (49-27) with 15:10 remaining after a pair of free throws by junior Crystal Smith|Richmond (Meadowbrook). That was as close as Longwood would get as the hosts pulled away and led by as many as 44 points before winning 79-37.

Billups scored 14 points (5-21 FG, 4-9 FT) and grabbed nine offensive rebounds to lead the Lancers. Morgan Smith added eight points (4-6 FG, 0-2 3FG) with a career-high 11 rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes. Crystal Smith added seven points (1-10 FG, 5-6 FT) and three assists. Longwood shot 22% (13-59) from the floor, including 11.1% (1-9) from behind the arc, and 50% (10-20) from the foul line. The Lancers grabbed 42 rebounds, including 21 offensive rebounds they turned in to 10 points.

Stamps (7-12 FG, 1-2 3FG) and Harvey (6-10 FG, 3-6 3FG) scored 15 points each, while Chelsea Hopkins scored 13 points (6-13 FG, 1-1 FT) and team-highs of 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. The Aztecs shot 44.6% (33-74) from the field, including 29.4% (5-17) from behind the arc, and 53.3% (8-15) from the foul line. SDSU out-rebounded the Lancers 52-42 and turned 21 Longwood turnovers in to 31 points, including 18 fast break points.
