DURHAM, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker at ninth-ranked Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sunday afternoon in Durham, North Carolina. The Blue Devils (5-1) scored the match-winning goal on a penalty stroke in the 69th minute. Junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded 13 saves for the Lancers (2-4). Longwood is back in action on Thursday, September 15, when it travels to Richmond to face Virginia Commonwealth University of the Colonial Athletic Association at 6 p.m.

Longwood held the Blue Devils scoreless in the first half, led by six saves by Goulding. The Lancers continued to stop Duke in the second half, withstanding six penalty corners in the period before giving up the penalty stroke goal to Emmie Le Marchand at 68:30.

The Blue Devils outshot Longwood 25-2 and had a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Lauren Sullivan|Fredericksburg (Stafford) and junior Kaity Byrum|Suffolk (Lakeland) each had one shot on goal for the Lancers, while Goulding recorded 13 saves in goal, her second-straight match with at least 13 saves. Duke was paced by Caashia Karringten with five shots, while Samantha Nelson made two saves while playing the duration in goal.
