Longwood Sweeps Past Coppin State 9-2, 5-1

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a home baseball doubleheader past visiting Coppin State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Saturday at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (8-5) have won six-straight games after taking game one against the Eagles (1-8) by a score of 9-2 and game two by a score of 5-1. Sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) led the way in the opener with a two-run home run, and junior Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) earned the pitching win with 8.0 strong innings, while junior Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, March 8, hosting Norfolk State University of the MEAC for another twinbill at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m.

Longwood fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of game one as Coppin State was aided by two errors, including a dropped fly ball, and a wild pitch. The Lancers promptly answered, however, scoring four runs in their half of the first with a pair of run-scoring singles from Newman (1-4, rbi) and junior D.J. Pomposini|Danville (George Washington) (1-3, rbi), along with an unearned run via a throwing error and another run scoring while a throw was made on a steal. Longwood made it 6-2 with two more runs in the second courtesy of the two-run home run to right field by Lacy (2-4, 2 rbi), his second in two days and team-leading fourth homer this season.

Longwood added two runs in the fourth as well on a sacrifice fly by junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (0-2, rbi) and an RBI single from freshman Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (2-3, rbi). The Lancers scored a final run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) (2-3, rbi) that scored freshman Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) (3-5) who had three hits in the contest.

Gwaltney (2-1) gained the Longwood pitching win with 8.0 strong innings on the mound, yielding just three hits and two runs, both unearned, with a career-high eight strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Kyle Long|Halifax (Halifax County) tossed a scoreless final inning on the mound for the Lancers, yielding two hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

Longwood scored three runs in the first inning of game two as Newman (2-2, 2 rbi) had another RBI single before a two-run single by freshman Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, 2 rbi). Coppin State scored a run in the fourth inning to close to within 3-1 via a double and three consecutive walks to force in the run. The Lancers added two runs in the fifth when Lacy (1-2, rbi) contributed a run-scoring single as did Newman once again.

Senior Troy Dickman|Manakin Sabot (Midlothian) (2-0) earned the Longwood pitching win in relief with 2.2 shutout innings, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior captain Mark Montgomery|Williamsburg (Bruton) tossed a scoreless final inning on the mound for the Lancers with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ryan Schubert| Springfield (Annandale) had started and pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and six walks.

Coppin State was led by Derek Richards (2-4) with two hits in the opener, while Jesse Savage (2-3) had two hits in the nightcap. Starting pitchers Ricky Ferri (0-1) and John Bergwall (0-3) took the pitching losses, respectively, for the Eagles. Ferri went just 1.0-plus innings, allowing four hits and five runs, four earned, with no strikeouts and four walks. Bergwall went the first 5.0 innings, yielding seven hits and five runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
