Longwood Drops 3-2 Decision At #14 Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Longwood University softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the 14th-ranked University of Hawai'i on Monday evening in Honolulu, Hawaii. The game was tied 2-2 through six innings before the Rainbow Wahine (21-5) scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Longwood (15-6) has a 10-day break before hosting Cornell University for a doubleheader on Friday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Lancer Field in Farmville.

The Lancers fell behind when Hawai'i scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tara Anguiano walked with one out and was replaced on the basepath by Brynne Buchanan. Buchanan advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Jessica Iwata was intentionally walked with two outs to put runners on first and second for Alex Aguirre. Aguirre hit a RBI single up the middle that cleared the bases after an error on the centerfielder to put Hawai'i ahead 2-0.

Longwood answered in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Brittany Matthews|Farmville (Prince Edward) walked to leadoff the inning. Matthews advanced to third when senior Kami Nuckols|Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. After a pitching change, senior Nichole Simmons|Chesapeake (Hickory) hit a RBI single to centerfield to score Matthews. Senior Maggie Margadonna|Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) walked to load the bases for sophomore Brooke Short|Altavista (Altavista). Short grounded out to the shortstop but Nuckols scored on the play. Senior Tricia Nelson|Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central) line out and junior Ashley Kramer|Ashburn (Broad Run) struck out to strand runners on second and third.

Hawai'i scored the winning run with two out in the seventh inning. Sarah Robinson hit a one-out triple to right field and was replaced at third base by Jasey Jensen. Anguiano struck out, then Dara Pagaduan reached on a throwing error by the second baseman that allowed Jensen to score.

Wells (12-6, 1.81 ERA) received the loss after giving up three runs, just one earned, on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Kaia Parnaby (8-1) received the win after throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.

Longwood also played an exhibition contest against the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education. The Lancers fell 4-2 after stranding six baserunners. TCWPE scored run run in the first inning and two runs in the third to lead 3-0. Longwood scored one run in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by freshman Leta Bressin|Gloucester (Gloucester). TWCPE added one more run in the sixth inning before Longwood scored one run in the top of the seventh inning when Simmons scored on a wild pitch.
