Longwood Falls At Gardner-Webb 68-50

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at Gardner-Webb University of the Big South Conference 68-50 on Wednesday night in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. The Lancers (6-20) were led by junior Brittanni Billups|Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville (Hanover) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Dominique Hudson paced the Bulldogs (18-9) with 16 points and eight assists. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, February 27, when it hosts Savannah State University at 2 p.m. in Willett Hall in Farmville. Senior Krystal Garrison|Fredericksburg (Courtland) will be recognized before the game on Senior Day.

Longwood led 6-5 after Billups converted a traditional three-point play with 15:31 remaining in the first half. A jumper by Monique Hudson put Bulldogs ahead 7-6 and started an 11-0 run that ended with a traditional three-point play by Dominique Hudson with 11:24 remaining. The hosts pushed the lead to 12 at 22-10 with 7:43 remaining, but the Lancers went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-16 with 6:07 remaining. Gardner-Webb went on a 7-2 run to end the half and led 29-18 at halftime.

Freshman Bria White|Silver Spring, Md. (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) hit a jumper to start the second half to cut the lead to nine, but the hosts went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:14 to lead 37-20 with 16:41 remaining. Gardner-Webb pushed the lead to as many as 26 points at 65-39 with 4:36 remaining before the Lancers went on an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to 15 at 65-50 with 1:36 remaining. Billups scored six points for Longwood during the run.

Longwood shot 33.3% (20-60) from the floor, including 20% (3-15) from behind the arc, and 77.8% (7-9) from the foul line. Billups scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds and two blocks. White scored 13 points (5-13 FG, 3-9 3FG) while Coward grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and added two points and two assists. Junior Mina Jovanovic|Smederevska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) scored eight points with a team-best five assists. The Lancers outrebounded Gardner-Webb 47-45 and scored eight second-chance points.

Gardner-Webb shot 38% (27-71) from the floor, including 23.8% (5-21) from behind the arc, and 42.9% (9-21) from the foul line. Dominique Hudson scored 16 points with eight assists and six rebounds while Monique Hudson and Jasmine Dale scored 10 points each. The Bulldogs turned 25 Longwood turnovers in to 31 points and scored 19 second-chance points.
