Longwood Falls At Home To George Mason 12-5

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 12-5 baseball decision at home to visiting George Mason University of the Colonial Athletic Association Wednesday at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (2-2) only trailed 5-4 through four innings before the Patriots (2-2) scored seven runs en route to the victory. LU was led at the plate by junior Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) with three hits, including an RBI double, and sophomore Justin Lacy| Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) with two hits, including a solo home run. GMU was led by Christopher Cook with two hits and two RBI. Longwood will play again at home this weekend, February 25-27, a four-game series against La Salle University of the Atlantic 10 Conference at Bolding Stadium. The series opener is Friday afternoon, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m.

Longwood fell behind 1-0 in the top of the third inning as George Mason scored an unearned run on a throwing error. The Lancers tied it with a run in their half of the third when freshman Zach Mihalko|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-3, RBI) singled and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice ball off the bat of junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (1-5, RBI). The Patriots tallied four more runs in the fourth, courtesy of one hit, one walk, a sacrifice fly, and three errors. LU again responded and scored three runs in the fourth, including the RBI double by Newman (3-4, RBI) and another fielder's choice RBI from Mihalko. Lacy (2-2, RBI) crossed the plate as well on a wild pitch after reaching via a walk.

George Mason added single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, along with two runs in the seventh, and three more runs in the eighth inning. The first two runs came on sacrifice flies, while in the seventh, both runs were courtesy another throwing error. In the eighth, Danny Lyons (1-3, 2 RBI) provided a two-run single and Cook (2-3, 2 RBI) added a run-scoring single. Longwood put one more run on the board in the eighth when Lacy hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field while leading-off the inning for the Lancers. Freshmen Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (2-5) also had two hits for the hosts.

Freshman Cory Ramsey|Petersburg (Matoaca) (0-1) went the first 4.1 innings on the mound and took the pitching loss for Longwood, scattering three hits and six runs, none earned, with four strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Ryan Schubert| Springfield (Annandale) was the last of four Lancers on the mound with the final 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Sean Cabrera (1-0) got the pitching win for George Mason with 1.2 innings of middle relief, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and one walk.
