Longwood trailed 40-28 at halftime, but cut the George Mason lead to four at 43-39 with 17:23 remaining in the game before the Patriots slowly pulled away. George Mason (2-1) was led by Taleia Moton with a game-high 30 points. The Lancers return to action on Sunday, November 20, when they face High Point University of the Big South Conference at 2 p.m. in High Point, North Carolina.
The Patriots jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after a trio of three-pointers, two by Moton, in the first 2:23 of the game. The Lancers answered with an 11-6 run to cut the lead to four at 15-11 with 13:34 remaining in the first half. Heather Tobeck|La Porte, Texas (La Porte) cut the lead to 10 with 0:54 remaining in the opening period. Moton hit a jumper just before halftime to send the Patriots into the locker room with a 40-28 lead.
In the second half, Moton made the second of two foul shots to extend the lead to 41-28 before the Lancers went on an 11-2 run to cut the advantage to four at 43-39 with 17:23 remaining in the game. Longwood ran with the Patriots and only trailed by 10 points at 56-46 after a jumper by Tobeck with 7:30 remaining. George Mason went 8-for-8 from the foul line the rest of the way and built a 24 point lead before winning 80-58.
Longwood shot 32.3% (20-62) from the field, including 25% (2-8) from behind the arc, and 66.7% (16-24) from the foul line. Longwood turned 20 George Mason turnovers into 16 points and scored 10 second-chance points after grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. The Lancers had 16 assists on 20 field goals. George Mason shot 55.4% (31-56) from the floor, including 55.6% (5-9) from behind the arc, and 86.7% (13-15) from the foul line. The Patriots out-rebounded Longwood 41-31 and scored 13 second-chance points. Moton scored 30 points (10-15 FG, 3-3 3FG, 7-8 FT), while Amber Easter added 16 points and Rahneeka Saunders scored 12 points.
