FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team topped the visiting University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference 3-1 on Saturday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Freshman Zach Crandall|Lorton (South County) scored two goals and junior Niels van Pelt|Den Haag, Netherlands (Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet) added one goal, the match-winner, and two assists against the Spiders (1-7-1). The Lancers (5-4-1) have won two-straight matches and have been victorious in four of their last five outings. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, October 5, when it hosts Radford University of the Big South Conference at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

Crandall scored his first goal at 31:21 when he took a pass from van Pelt 40 yards from the goal and beat the defenders and goalkeeper to score. The Lancers added their second goal at 39:24 on a corner kick when senior Chris Saul|Pasadena, Md. (Chesapeake) sent a corner kick to the far post and the head of classmate Shane Johnson|Ashburn (Broad Run), who sent the ball to the middle of the box where van Pelt shot and scored. Richmond cut the Longwood lead to 2-1 at 50:52 when Timmy Albright scored on a header off a corner kick. Crandall pushed the advantage back to two goals when he took a long pass from van Pelt and scored at 84:52 to give the Lancers the 3-1 lead.

“It was very nice to continue the winning feeling with some good individual performances, notably from Zach Crandall and Niels,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “We were made to work all the way by a capable Richmond unit, but we dug deep when we had to. I was disappointed to concede tonight. I hoped we could have played cleaner, but we did enough tonight, and I am happy for the players.”

Longwood outshot Richmond 21-8, including 10-3 in shots on goal, and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Crandall scored two goal on a team-high four shots, while sophomore Nick Surkamp|Manassas (Osbourn Park) added three shots with one shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Joel Helmick|Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made two saves in 90 minutes in goal. Richmond was paced by Albright with a match-high five shots. Thomas Hand recorded seven saves while playing the duration in goal.
