Longwood Falls At Cornell 69-65

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Longwood University women's basketball team dropped a 69-65 decision on the road at Cornell University of the Ivy League on Sunday afternoon in Ithaca, New York. The Lancers (3-11) rallied from an early 13-point deficit to trail 31-28 at halftime. Longwood was led by senior Krystal Garrison | Fredericksburg (Courtland) with a career-high 20 points while Allyson DiMagno scored 15 points to pace Cornell (3-11). The Lancers return to action on Friday, January 14, when they host Liberty University of the Big South Conference at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall in Farmville.

Longwood started cold and trailed 19-6 with 11:56 remaining in the first half. Junior Brittanni Billups | Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) scored five of the next seven points as the Lancers cut the deficit to six at 19-13 with 8:15 remaining in the half. A jumper by sophomore Heather Tobeck | La Porte, Texas (La Porte) and a pair of free throws by junior Brittany Jones | Richmond (North Florida) cut the lead 21-17 with 5:55 remaining in the half. The hosts pushed the lead back to eight, but Garrison scored nine points over the next 3:30 to tie the game at 26-26 with 2:23 remaining. A layup by Billups put the Lancers ahead 28-26 with 1:50 remaining. The hosts scored the final five points of the half to lead 31-28 at halftime.

Cornell pushed the lead to six but back-to-back steals by Garrison led to layups by sophomore Erin Neal | Durham (Hillside) and Garrison to cut the lead to 36-34 with 17:40 remaining. The Big Red pushed the lead back to 10 at 52-42 on a layup by DiMagno with 11:03 remaining. Freshman Emilee Dunton |?Forest (Brookville) drained a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 Longwood run to pull the Lancers within three at 52-49 with 8:48 remaining. Stephanie Long hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to five before Dunton nailed her third three-pointer of the half to pull within two. The hosts pushed the lead back to eight at 62-54 with 5:13 remaining before the Lancers went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:24 remaining. Neal and junior Mina Jovanovic | Smederevska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) each made a layup during the run and Garrison converted a four-point play after getting fouled on a successful three-point attempt. DiMagno hit a pair of free throws and Clare Fitzpatrick added another to put Cornell ahead three, but Garrison drained her final three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 65-65 with 40 seconds remaining. DiMagno grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback layup to put the Big Red ahead 67-65 with 7.2 seconds remaining. Garrison took a handoff from Jovanovic as she raced up the sideline, but the play was disrupted at the three-point line and the Lancers turned the ball over with one second remaining. Long hit a pair of free throws to make the final score 69-65.

Longwood shot 41% (25-61) from the floor, including 35% (7-20) from behind the arc and 72.7% (8-11) from the foul line. Garrison scored 20 points (8-14 FG, 3-5 3FG) and added three steals and two assists. Dunton scored a career-high nine points (3-4 3FG) while Jones added nine points as well. The Lancers dished out 16 assists and recorded 15 steals.

Cornell shot 48.9% from the floor, including 30.8% from behind the arc, and 73.1% from the foul line. DiMagno scored 15 points while Fitzpatrick added 14 points, Kristina Danielak scored 13 points and Long added 10 points. The Big Red turned 21 Longwood turnovers in to 20 points and scored 14 second-chance points.
