TOWSON, Md. - The Longwood University men's soccer team fell 3-1 at Towson University of the Colonial Athletic Association on Wednesday afternoon in Towson, Maryland. Sophomore Michael Tegler | Stafford (North Stafford) scored his first goal of the season in the second half. The Lancers (0-5) return to action on Saturday, September 18, when they travel to Jacksonville, Florida, to take on the University of North Florida at 5 p.m..

“We played some of our best soccer of the season at times today,” said sixth-year head coach Jon Atkinson. “The biggest difference was costly errors that turned in to goals. We have to take the positives from playing against a seasoned team like Towson.”

Longwood fell behind 1-0 in the 13th minute after Towson's Zach Hoffer sent a shot from 30 yards out that slipped past the goalkeeper. The Tigers (5-0) scored the second goal in the 63rd minute on a breakaway goal by Kay Banjo. Liam Maloney tacked on the third goal in the 64th minute to put Towson ahead 3-0. Tegler scored his first goal of the season in the 86th minute off a cross from the far post from freshman Chandler Tulin | Bear, Del. (Caravel Academy).

The Lancers had several scoring opportunities but were turned away by the Tigers. Sophomore Adel Sarras | Burke (Annandale) sent three shots wide in the first 15 minutes of the second half, while sophomore Parker Arnold | Columbia, S.C. (Darlington Academy) had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper that he could not convert. Freshman Nick Surkamp | Manassas (Osbourn Park) had a header attempt stopped by the Towson goalkeeper in the 69th minute.

Longwood junior goalkeeper Joel Helmick | Springfield (W.T. Woodson) made three saves in 90 minutes while Angelo Viteritti made five saves in the match.

Towson out-shot Longwood 18-12, but the Lancers had a 10-8 advantage in the second half. The Tigers held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
