Longwood Splits With Visiting Virginia Tech; Wins 10-7 And Falls 4-3

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team split a doubleheader against visiting Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning 10-7 in the first game before falling 4-3 in the nightcap on Wednesday evening at Lancer Field in Farmville. Longwood was led by senior Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) who went 3-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI. Junior Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched two complete games and picked up one win, improving her NCAA-best win total to 28. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, April 24, when they travel to Lynchburg for a doubleheader at Liberty University at 1 p.m..

In the first game, the Hokies scored in the top of the first inning but Longwood answered in the bottom of the first inning with three runs. Junior Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (2-4, RBI) scored on a Ketsdever (2-4, 4 RBI, HR) single for the first run. Senior Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) (2-3, 3 RBI) followed with a two-RBI single that scored sophomore Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (3-4, 3R) and freshman Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (2-3, 2R). The Lancers added one run in the second inning when Margadonna doubled to right field and junior Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) (2-3, RBI) scored after the right fielder bobbled the ball. Virginia Tech cut the Longwood lead to 4-2 after a RBI triple by Misty Hall in the top of the third inning but Betterton drove in her third run of the night in the bottom of the inning, scoring Kramer and pushing the Longwood lead back to 5-2. The Hokies chipped away in the top of the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs to trim the lead to 5-4. Longwood answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs, three of them on a Ketsdever home run to center field. Nuckols drove in junior Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central) and Margadonna hit a single to score Nuckols to put the Lancers ahead 10-4 after six innings. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but Longwood held on for the win.

Wells (28-8) gave up seven runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Kenzie Roark (6-17) received the loss for Virginia Tech after giving up five runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. Hall (2-3, 3B, 2 RBI) and Courtney Liddle (1-3, HR) led the Hokies at the plate in the first game.

The Hokies struck first in the second game as well, scoring three runs in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Kristin Graham (2-3, 3 RBI, HR, 2B). Longwood did not trail long as Short (1-3) scored in the bottom of the third inning on a single by Kramer (1-3, RBI). Ketsdever (1-2, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run home run to center field to tie the game at 3-3 after four innings. Virginia Tech scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Kristina Cruz (1-2, RBI).

Wells received the loss after giving up four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell (9-9) was credited with the win after allowing three runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts, including the first six batters she faced.
