Longwood Sweeps Visiting Norfolk State 5-4, 8-2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader against visiting Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Wednesday at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (19-16) won the first game against the Spartans (12-18-1) by a score of 5-4 as senior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) collected three hits and two RBI before taking the second game 8-2 as junior Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) had three hits and an RBI while senior Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) pitched a complete-game victory. Longwood will now be idle for nearly two weeks with spring semester examinations next week before playing again on Tuesday, May 4, hosting the University of Richmond from the Atlantic 10 Conference at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood scored four runs in the second inning to lead 4-0 before Norfolk State scored two runs in the third and it remained 4-2 through five innings. The Lancers added a run in the sixth to lead 5-2, and the Spartans added two runs in the seventh for the final one-run margin that allowed LU to stop a recent three-game losing streak.

In the second, Bailey (3-3, 2 RBI) and senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-5, 2 RBI) each had two-run singles, while in the sixth, Jones (2-4, RBI) provided a sacrifice fly RBI that proved the difference in the outcome. Senior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-4) also contributed two hits to the 11-hit attack in game one.

Junior Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (5-4) took the pitching win for Longwood with the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering seven hits and four runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (4) earned the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.

Chris Joyce (3-5, 3 RBI) led Norfolk State with three hits and three RBI, while Jason Barker (3-3) had the mound loss for NSU while pitching the first 5.0 innings, yielding eight hits and four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored one run in the second, two runs in the third, one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and one run in the sixth. The Lancers led just 3-2 after three innings as Norfolk State scored a run in both the second and third innings, but LU tallied the final five runs of the contest for the six-run margin of victory.

In the second, freshman Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-1, RBI) had an RBI single, while in the third, Jones (3-3, RBI) and Smiy (2-4, RBI) each added run-scoring singles. In the fourth, senior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-3, RBI) contributed a sacrifice fly RBI, and in the fifth, sophomore Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-3, 3 RBI) hit a towering three-run home run to left for his seventh homer this season. In the sixth, Jones led-off with a double down the left field line and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Lancers had 10 hits in game two.

Harting improved his pitching record to a perfect 6-0 this spring with the complete-game, 7.0 inning effort on the mound, allowing just three hits and two runs, both earned, with a career-high eight strikeouts and two walks.

Brandon Hairston (1-2, RBI) led NSU with a solo home run, while Ryan Davis (1-4) took the pitching loss for the Spartans with the first 2.0-plus innings, yielding four hits and three runs, two earned, with one strikeout and one walk.

Havers (14) and Jones (10) each extended their respective current hitting streaks, while unfortunately, senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (0-3) had his 14-game hitting streak end after game one (1-3).
