BALTIMORE, Md. – The Longwood University softball team swept the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland, winning both games 5-1. Junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up the win in both games and set the Longwood single season win record with 25 wins. Wells struck out 12 batters in 14 innings, scattering 14 hits and allowing just one run in each game. The Lancers (29-11) return to action on Wednesday, April 14, when they host the University of North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference at 2:30 p.m. at Lancer Field in Farmville.
In the first game, Longwood raced out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) (1-4) scored the first run on a groundout by freshman
Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (1-3, RBI) and junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (2-4, 2 RBI) added the second run when she scored on a RBI single by senior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (3-4, 2 RBI, HR). The Lancers added another pair of runs in the second inning when sophomore
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) and Nuckols scored on a two-RBI double by Margadonna. Longwood added an insurance run in the third inning when Ketsdever hit a solo home run down the left field line to put Longwood ahead 5-0. UMBC (18-16) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the final score 5-1.
Wells (25-5) picked up the win, giving up one run on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Heather Brown (6-6) received the loss for the Retrievers, giving up five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
In the second game, the Lancers again struck first when junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (1-2, 2 RBI) scored on a sacrifice fly by Wells. Longwood added three runs in the fourth inning, the first when Ketsdever (1-3) scored on a RBI double by senior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) (1-3, RBI). Simmons hit a two-run home run to center field to make the score 4-1 after 3 1/2 innings. UMBC scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning but Longwood answered in the top of the fifth when Nuckols scored on a bunt single by Margadonna (2-3, RBI) to make the score 5-1.
Wells picked up her second win of the day after giving up one run on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Stephanie Weigman took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
