Longwood Sweeps At Le Moyne 12-11, 5-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader on the road at Le Moyne College Saturday in Syracuse, New York. The Lancers (16-13) won the first game 12-11 in 12 innings before taking the second game 5-2, and were once-again led by senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) with four hits, including two home runs, and six RBI against the Dolphins (18-16). Longwood and Le Moyne will play their three-game weekend series finale on Sunday, April 11, in Syracuse beginning at 12 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game at 8-8, and scored four runs in the 12th while taking the 12-11 slugfest. The Lancers had scored one run in the first and four runs in the third to lead 5-0 early before Le Moyne scored two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, two runs in fifth, and one run in the seventh to lead 8-5. After LU led 12-8, the Dolphins added three more runs in the 12th for the final one-run margin.

In the first, Cerreto (3-5, 4 RBI) had a one-out RBI single. In the third, senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-6, 3 RBI) had an RBI?ground-out, Cerreto hit a two-run home run to right, and sophomore Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-6, RBI) added a two-out, run-scoring single. In the ninth, junior Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-4, 2 RBI) and Cerreto each contributed sacrifice flies while sophomore Michael Sims/Stafford (North Stafford) (1-3, RBI) had a clutch, two-out RBI single to send the game to extra innings. In the 12th, Jones walked with the bases loaded to score Newman who had opened with a bunt single, senior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-5) crossed the plate on a wild pitch after reaching on a throwing error while executing a sacrifice bunt, and Havers produced the decisive two-run single. Senior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (3-5) also had three hits in game one.

Sophomore Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (2-1) took the pitching win for Longwood with 3.0 scoreless innings of late relief, yielding just one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

Ryan Mahoney (4-6, RBI) had four hits and an RBI for Le Moyne, while Kyle Kalaka (2-5, 3 RBI) added two hits and an three RBI for the Dolphins -- including a two-run homer and a triple. Luke Nellis (2-1) had the mound loss with the final 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and four runs, three earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.

In the nightcap, Le Moyne scored a run in the first inning and it stood through five before Longwood scored three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to lead 5-1. The Dolphins managed another run in the seventh for the final three-run margin.

In the sixth, Cerreto (1-3, 2 RBI) hit a one-out, two-run home run and freshman Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-3, RBI) added a run-scoring double. It was Cerreto's team-leading seventh homer this season as well as increasing his team-best RBI total to 47. In the seventh, Havers (1-4, 2 RBI) contributed a two-run home run for his first homer this spring.

Senior Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (5-0) earned the complete-game pitching win for Longwood, scattering just two hits and two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and two walks for his fifth win this season.

Cory Nelson (1-3) had the mound loss for Le Moyne with the first 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with seven strikeouts and five walks. Mahoney (0-3, RBI) had the lone RBI for the Dolphins.
