RALEIGH, N.C. – The Longwood University softball team defeated Coastal Carolina University 9-0 and Stony Brook University 7-2 on Saturday at the Wolfpack Challenge at Dail Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Lancers (8-6) were led by junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) who went 5-for-6 with a double and scored five runs. Junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) started both games in the circle and went 2-0, giving up just one earned run and striking out 10 in 11 innings. The Lancers continue play in the Wolfpack Challenge when they play Georgetown University at 10 a.m. before taking on host N.C. State at 2 p.m..
Against Coastal Carolina (5-9), the Lancers scored one run in the top of the first inning when Margadonna (3-3, 3 runs) scored on an RBI double by junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (1-3, RBI). Longwood added three runs in the third inning, the first when junior
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) (0-3, 2 runs) scored from third on a RBI single by Margadonna. Senior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) (2-3, HR, 4 RBI) hit a two-run home run to put Longwood ahead 4-0 after three innings. In the fourth inning, Wells (1-3, HR, 2 RBI) helped her own cause when she hit her third home run of the season, this one a two-run shot to put Longwood ahead 6-0. Betterton added a two-RBI single that scored Margadonna to take a 8-0 lead through four innings. Senior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (1-2, HR) hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning to put the Lancers ahead 9-0.
Wells gave up one hit with six strikeouts in four innings while walking three. Junior
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) pitched one scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Jazmin Daigle went 1-for-1 for the Chanticleers, getting their only hit. Ashley Frederick gave up four unearned runs in three innings with three strikeouts in the loss.
Against Stony Brook, the Lancers scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Simmons (2-4, 2 RBI) singled to center field and drove in two runs and then Wells (1-3, RBI) drove in Simmons with an RBI single. Stony Brook got one run back in the bottom of the first inning but the Lancers answered in the top of the second inning when Nuckols (2-4, RBI) scored after the centerfielder misplayed a single by Nuckols, allowing Nuckols to advance two bases to give Longwood the 5-1 lead after three innings. Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (3-4, 2RBI, HR) hit a two-run home run to right-center field. Stony Brook scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not pull any closer, falling 7-2.
Wells gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.
Stony Brook was led by leadoff batter Vicki Kavitsky who went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Casey Jacobs was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.
