FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team split a pair of games with visiting Radford University, winning the first game 8-3 before dropping the nightcap 12-0 in five innings at Lancer Field in Farmville. Junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the first game while freshman
Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. The Lancers (23-11) return to action on Tuesday, April 6, when they host Howard University at 2 p.m. at Lancer Field in Farmville.
In the first game, the Lancers fell behind 1-0 after Radford (17-10) hit in the first inning but answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) hit a two-run double to left field that scored Short and Margadonna to put Longwood ahead 2-1. Junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) singled to drive in Kramer to put the Lancers on top 3-1 after the first inning. Longwood added another run in the second inning when junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) hit a leadoff home run to put Longwood ahead 4-1. Sophomore
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) led off the fourth inning with a double to centerfield and came around to score on a Margadonna single. Short followed with a two-run home run to give the Lancers the 7-1 lead after four innings. Margadonna added another RBI single in the fifth inning to put Longwood ahead 8-1. Radford scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make the final score 8-3.
Wells (19-5) scattered seven hits over seven innings and gave up three runs, two of them earned, with three strikeouts. Chelsea Kelley received the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
In the second game, the Lancers fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and gave up five more runs in the second frame to trail 9-0 after two innings. Radford added two runs in the third and one in the fifth to win 12-0. Longwood scattered six hits over five innings but left eight runners on base. Short (1-2) received the loss after giving up nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits in two innings. Kellie Snooks (4-3) picked up the win after pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) picked up a hit in both games and extended her hitting streak to 21 games, one shy of the Longwood record of 22.
