FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Le Moyne College Saturday at Bolding Stadium in Farmville, winning the second game 1-0 after falling in the first game 5-1. It was a day where the pitchers had the upper hand throughout with three of the four starters throwing complete games while a save was earned as well. The Lancers (10-10) were led in the nightcap against the Dolphins (11-12) by the combined three-hit shutout pitching of senior
Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) and sophomore
Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton), and a game-winning home run from senior
Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover). Longwood and Le Moyne will complete their three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 28, beginning at 12 p.m.. Admission is free to all home baseball games at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
In game two, Longwood scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning on a two-out, solo home run to left field by Bailey (1-3, RBI). Harting and Montgomery took care of the rest as Harting (3-0) made his first start of the season and pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, yielding just three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Montgomery finished the final 1.2 shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits with one strikeout and no walks for his second save this season. The Lancers only had three hits in the game as well with singles from junior
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-2) and freshman
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-3).
Le Moyne was led by Vincent Redmond (1-2) with a double, while Cory Nelson (1-2) took the pitching loss for the Dolphins with the complete game 6.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and one walk.
In game one, Le Moyne scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to lead 4-0 before Longwood managed a run in the fourth as well. The Dolphins added another run in the eighth for the final four-run margin of victory.
Longwood was led by seniors
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4, RBI) and
Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4) with two hits each, including a run-scoring single by Cerreto in the fourth. Senior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-3) had a single in the fourth inning of the opener as well to extend his team-best hitting streak to 12 games before it ended in the nightcap (0-1) on a ground ball out while pinch hitting in the fifth inning.
Junior
Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3) had the hard-luck loss for Longwood, pitching the complete game 9.0 innings while scattering seven hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and three walks.
Le Moyne was led by Redmond (2-4, 2 RBI) and Zach Wiley (2-4, 2 RBI) as each collected two hits and two RBI. Wiley had a solo homer in the eighth after an RBI double in the third. Redmond had a two-run double in the fourth. Jeff Tardiff (3-2) took the mound win for the Dolphins with the complete game 9.0 innings, allowing seven hits and one run, unearned, with seven strikeouts and two walks.
