FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Rider University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Saturday at Bolding Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 12-9 before falling in the second game 19-5. The Lancers (9-7) were led in the opener by senior
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) with three hits and three RBI, and junior
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) with four hits and two RBI while the Broncs (8-8) had 16 hits in the nightcap, including four home runs en route to the split. Longwood and Rider will complete their weekend series on Sunday, March 21, beginning at 1 p.m.. Admission is free to all home baseball games at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
In game one, Longwood scored two runs in the first inning and four runs in the second to take an early 6-1 advantage. The Lancers added five runs in the fourth to lead 11-2 before Rider scored four runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to close to within 11-8. LU scored one more run in the seventh before the Broncs managed another run in the ninth.
Longwood was led by Cerreto (3-5, 3 RBI) and Jones (4-5, 2 RBI) as Cerreto contributed a two-run single in the first and an RBI double in the fourth while Jones nearly hit for the cycle with an RBI triple in the second and an RBI single in the fourth sandwiched around a double in the third. Senior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-4, 2 RBI) had an RBI single in the second, and an RBI double in the fourth while maintaining his current nine-game hitting streak. Freshman
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-3, RBI) hit his third home run this season in the seventh, a solo shot to the opposite left field corner. Senior
David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-4) also had two hits for the Lancers in the opener.

Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) (2-0) got the mound win for Longwood, pitching 3.0 innings of middle relief while scattering five hits and six runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.
Rider was led by Darron Lattomus (2-3, 2 RBI), Mason Heyne (2-5), and Adam Wayman (2-5) with two hits each. Ryan Miller (1-2) took the loss for the Broncs with the first 1.0-plus innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks.
In game two, Longwood fell behind 16-0 in the fourth inning as Rider scored four runs in the first, five in the second, six in the third, and one in the fourth. The Lancers finally got on the board with two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth but the Broncs scored three more runs in the sixth ahead of two more runs for LU in the sixth as well.

Michael Johnson/Chesapeake (Atlantic Shores Christian) (1-2) had the loss for Longwood, pitching the first 1.2 innings while yielding seven hits and nine runs, all earned, with one strikeout and four walks.
Rider was led by Heyne (3-4, 5 RBI), John Ralston (3-3, 3 RBI), A.J. Albee (2-6, 2 RBI), and Mike O'Reilly (1-2, 4 RBI) as each hit home runs. Patrick Devlin (2-1) took the win for the Broncs with the first 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and four walks.
