FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Coppin State University at Bolding Stadium Monday afternoon in Farmville, winning the first game 11-10 before taking the second game 14-5 to open the campaign with five consecutive victories. The Lancers (5-0) rallied from an early 6-2 deficit in the opener with eight runs in the third inning before withstanding a late rally by the Eagles (0-5), while taking an early 8-0 advantage in the nightcap en route to the twinbill sweep. Longwood is scheduled to play at North Carolina Central on Tuesday in Durham, North Carolina beginning at 3 p.m..

In game one, Longwood fell behind 6-1 in the second inning as Coppin State scored six runs before the Lancers scored two runs in the second and eight more runs in the third to lead 11-6 after three innings. It remained that way until the Eagles scored four runs in the seventh inning for the final margin. LU opened with a run in the first inning as senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-4, 4 RBI) doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-4, RBI). In the second, freshman Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-2, 2 RBI) hit his second home run in two days, a two-run shot to right-center field. In the third, Cerreto slammed his first home run of the season, a grand slam nonetheless, while adding a double in the inning as well and scoring on an error. Sophomore Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (0-2, RBI) and Michael Sims/Stafford (North Stafford) (1-2, RBI) each contributed sacrifice flies during the at bat.

Freshman Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) (1-0) earned his first collegiate pitching win with 3.1 innings of middle relief, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Classmate Michael Johnson/Chesapeake (Atlantic Shores Christian) (1) picked-up his first collegiate save with the final 1.0 inning, yielding one hit, one run, earned, with a strikeout.

Derek Richards was 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead Coppin State in game one. Andrew Keissling (0-1) took the mound loss for the Eagles with the first 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, nine runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, Longwood made sure of the outcome early with eight runs in the first inning, adding three more runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, and another run in the fifth inning. In the first, the Lancers had five hits while aided by three walks, two errors, and a wild pitch. Havers (3-5, 2 RBI) contributed a pair of RBI singles, while Newman (2-3, 3 RBI) added an RBI double, and senior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (3-4, RBI) had an RBI single as well. In the third, Newman hit his second home run of the spring, a two-run shot to left-center field, while in the fourth, senior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (3-4, 2 RBI) hit his first homer of the season, also a two-run shot to left field.

Johnson (1-0) started the nightcap and tossed the first 3.0 innings of the pre-determined staff outing while scattering five hits and three runs, each earned, with two strikeouts and no walks.  Freshman Kyle Long/Halifax (Halifax County) (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings of middle relief, allowing no hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Dwight Robinson was 3-4 with an RBI to lead Coppin State in game two. Jim Vagnier (0-1) took the mound loss for the Eagles with the first 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, eight runs, four earned, with three strikeouts and four walks.
