FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team defeated Lehigh University 14-2 in five innings and fell to Ohio University 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. Longwood (6-6) was led by junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) who went 2-for-2 with two homeruns and five RBI while starting in the circle and picking up the win (5-3) against Lehigh. The Lancers hit six home runs on Sunday, five in the Lehigh game, the most home runs in a game by Longwood since the 2006 season. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, March 6, when they travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, where they will face Coastal Carolina University at 10 a.m. and Stony Brook University at 2:30 p.m. in the Wolfpack Challenge.
Against Lehigh (2-2), the Lancers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when freshman
Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (2-3, HR, 3 runs) hit a two-out solo home run. The Mountain Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. Longwood answered with eight runs in the top of the third inning. Junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (3-4, RBI) started the scoring with an RBI single followed by junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (3-4, HR, 4 RBI) with an RBI single. Sophomore
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (2-4, 2 RBI) hit a two-RBI single down the right field line to score Short and Margadonna. Wells (2-2, 2 HR, 5 RBI) went to the plate for her second appearance of the inning and hit a long-ball over the right field wall for the grand slam. After Lehigh scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 9-2 the Lancers tacked four runs on the lead, three of them coming on a Simmons home run to left field. Sophomore
Brittney Latka/Purcellville (Loudon Valley) (1-1, HR) followed two batters later with a solo home run to right center field. Wells added one more run in the top of the fifth inning with a home run to left field.
Wells pitched all five innings to pick up the win, giving up two runs, only one earned, on five hits while striking out four. Bri Gaumer (0-1) was the losing pitcher, giving up six runs on eight hits.
In the Ohio game, Longwood fell behind 3-0 in the second inning after the Bobcats scored three runs on four hits. Ohio added another run in the sixth inning when Jordan Paden hit a leadoff home run to make the score 4-0. Longwood answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, both coming on a home run by senior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine). The Bobcats added two runs in the top of the seventh inning, both of the unearned and the Lancers could not cross the plate in the bottom-half of the frame, making the final score 6-2.
Junior
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (0-2) gave up three runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Wells pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, only one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts. Emily Wethington (3-2) picked up the win, giving up two unearned runs while scattering seven hits and striking out seven.
Jillian Van Wagnen went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the Bobcats while Paden went 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI.
