NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Longwood University softball team split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Fordham University 4-0 before falling to Morehead State University 7-5. The games were played in Newport News after the Lancer Leadoff Classic was cancelled due to poor field conditions in Farmville. Freshman
Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) went 2-for-6 on the day with one home run, two RBI and scored two runs. Junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up the win against Fordham and gave up three hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings. The Lancers (1-3) return to action on Sunday, February 21, when they face Morehead State at 11 a.m. and Quinnipiac University at 3 p.m..

Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) hit a leadoff home run. Longwood pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when senior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) scored from second on a fielding error by the rightfielder. Junior
Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a Kramer double. Wells pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only three hits, all singles, and one walk while striking out three.
The Lancers struck first in the Morehead State game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) hit a two-run home run, driving in Short. Matthews drilled a two-out, two RBI single that scored senior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) and Margadonna. Morehead State answered in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Five of those runs were charged to Short who started in the circle for the Lancers before she was replaced by freshman
Ashley Cornell/Portsmouth (Churchland). Longwood scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Short home run, making the score 6-5. The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 7-5. Short went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs and a home run in the second game. She pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Cornell went 1 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
