Longwood Falls To IPFW 78-62

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to visiting Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne of the Summit League 78-62 on Tuesday afternoon in Willett Hall in Farmville.  Longwood (2-8) was led by sophomore Chelsea Coward | Mechanicsville (Hanover) with 17 points while the Mastodons (7-4) were paced by Jordan Zuppe with a game-high 23 points. The Lancers return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, December 22, when they travel to face George Mason University of the Colonial Athletic Association at 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center in Fairfax.

IPFW jumped out to a 12-3 lead four minutes in to the game and led 16-7 with 11:15 remaining in the first half. The Lancers went on a 9-2 run over the next 5:56 to cut the deficit to two at 18-16 with 5:11 remaining in the half. Five different Longwood players scored during the run, led by Coward with three points. The Mastodons went on a 16-8 run over the final five minutes of the half to lead 34-24 at halftime.

Longwood kept the game within 10 points early in the second half when junior Emma Zieverink | West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) drained a three-pointer to make the score 39-29 with 17:38 remaining. The Mastodons pushed the lead to 22 at 57-35 with 9:48 remaining, but Longwood went on a 14-2 run over the next 2:30 to trim the deficit to 10 at 59-49 with 7:18 left in the game. The Lancers held the Mastodons to a pair of free throws during the run while Coward scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Longwood could not pull closer and IPFW slowly extended the lead back to 17 points, eventually winning 78-62.

Longwood shot 36.1% (22-61)?from the floor, including 26.3% (5-19) from behind the arc, and 65% (13-20) from the foul line. Coward paced Longwood with a team-high 17 points (5-9 FG, 3-4 3FG), while juniors Brittanni Billups | Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) (3-12 FG) and Mina Jovanovic | Smederevska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) (4-6 FG) and sophomore Erin Neal | Durham, N.C. (Hillside) (3-5 FG) scored eight points each. Billups added a team-high six rebounds while Neal had three steals. Longwood had eight steals and turned 19 IPFW turnovers in to 21 points, including 10 fast break points.

IPFW shot 41.9% (26-62) from the floor, including 40.9% (9-22) from behind the arc, and 73.9% (17-23) from the foul line. Zuppe paced the Mastodons with a game-high 23 points (4-7 3FG, 9-10 FT) while Anne Boese added 19 points (7-15 FG, 5-10 3FG) and Sydney Weinert scored 12 points (6-7 FG). IPFW scored 22 second chance points and outrebounded Longwood 47-35, including 13-4 on the offensive boards in the second half. Stephanie Rosado grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
